First time making Sushi Rolls |

Today was the first time I attempted to make Sushi Rolls. I had all the ingredients ready for roughly three weeks now. Only last weekend was I able to get A bamboo mat.
I was waiting for the perfect day to make them. The sun to be shining bright, bright as can be blue sky.. Awww.. Beautiful day. Sit by the river and try for the first time a Sushi Roll. Well today I thought was a pretty ideal day to complete that fairy tale.
I was planning on making simple Sushi Rolls. Rice, Crab sticks, Carrot, and Egg. Easy, huh? Well as the rice was cooking I sliced up the carrots. When I opened the Nori (seaweed) package, the smell of the nori reminded me of green tea.
The first attempt to roll the Sushi Roll was a fail. I added too much rice to it. So I reopened it and saved the goodies (crab, carrot and egg) to try another one. By this time my rice was still hot, but was getting smushy.
The smell I first enjoyed and thought that this sushi roll stuff may not be half bad, but as the rice started to heat up my second nori sheet.. The smell turned (as they would say ) south. "Oh, this is starting to stink." I thought. The second attempt was a success. I rolled it pretty good, but it wasn't tight as it could have been. However as I started my third one, the smell got stronger. "This is really stinky!" "Man this really stinks! Really stinks!!" My dream was getting cracks in it. My stomach was starting a protest as if it was saying, "Are you really going to feed me that stuff that smells that bad?"
I did two other sushi rolls and left them on a plate. I had nice plates and matching tea cups ready to go and be used for the first time (bought them at goodwill though XD; ) The first knife I used to slice up the Sushi rolls was not sharp enough, but when I had it cut up I placed the sliced pieces on the plate how I wanted it to look. The smell of the nori was making my resolve of eating Sushi Rolls for the first time begin to weaken and I began to get nervous, worried and slightly scared to try it.
I had InuYasha (Yes InuYasha <3), Theme song collection CD (opening and ending songs, etc like that) playing in the background. I sat at the table with chopsticks in my hand, hesitating to pick up the first piece of sushi roll and put it in my mouth.
The first second of having the sushi roll in my mouth, I tasted the salty rice.. Second second, a total different taste began to creep up.. Chew chew.. "OH MY!! UGH!" I thought. I covered my mouth and bared it down to keep chewing. I had this urge to spit it out. "spit it out! spit it out!" it felt like something was saying, but I thought I had to at least, AT LEAST, get one down. My dream was sucked into a black whole before it even got the change to break into millions of pieces.
I quickly grasped onto my tea and gulped it down. POISON! Is what my stomach acted like it was. It was already giving my trouble from the nori smell, but now it was really bad. For two hours after having only that one piece (roughly an inch in width) my stomach was suffering and giving me the warning, "I'm going to throw up.. I'm going to throw up.."
I was scared to eat anything after that for fear that I may really throw up. But, I ended up getting a sub and eating it. It may have tasted awful, horrible, but it gave me a emotion high. I was dancing and singing as my stomach was waving a white flag. Oddly enough, whenever I stopped dancing and singing, my stomach would begin to feel worse (most like it was because I was distracting my mind with something other than my stomach).
Now that I have finally made Sushi rolls for the first time I am happy, but I am also now terrified by them. I am also very glad I did nor go to the park by the river and have them there for the first time. Can you imagine how embarrassing it would have been if someone would have seen my reaction to the taste?
I wonder too if it would taste much better if a professional made them and I tasted them. Would they be different or the same? Maybe only a tiny bit better, but still awful?
It kinda feels like I'm one of those female manga characters that are all excited to cook for the first time for the person they like and the guy who it awaiting to taste her food is excited that it's her food, cooked just for him. It looks good on the outside, but when he puts the food in his mouth... DISASTER!!! It tastes AWFUL! Like poison, not food!
Sigh... I don't think I'll ever look at Sushi Roll the same ever again.
