Darius decided to go for a walk that day. Why? That sure was a good question, considering Darius didn’t really like walking. But he went for a walk and wound up walking among the trees. Up ahead, he could see a nice little bench area that he decided to sit at. He lolled his head back, relaxed and calm for once…seemingly so. His nine millimeter was always close at hand and he was always alert. So it came of no surprise to him when he instantly knew he was being watched. He whipped his head up and stared straight into big childish bright green eyes that practically glowed. The eyes were attached to a head that was attached to a body that belonged to a girl with very long thick black hair. She was crouching on a low branch on a tree just a few feet in front of him and was staring with the fixed stare of a cat. Weirdo, he thought. He figured that, like most people caught staring, she would look away, but she continued to stare at him, raptly, as if fascinated. “What the hell is your problem?” he grumbled, shifting uncomfortably. The girl’s head cocked to the side. “I have a problem?” Her voice, like her, was light and childish, curious. He could hear the friendly note in her voice and wanted nothing to do with it. “Well, why the hell are you staring at me?” His was very annoyed by her intent leering and it seemed to puzzle her. “Do you not like it?” “No! Of course, I don’t like it!” he replied indignantly. Why would anyone like to be stared at, especially by so eerie a person. “Why?” came the airy voice…like a kid! “Why? Because it’s annoying!” “But why is it annoying?” “B-because it…it just is!” Devario began to feel flustered and stumbled over his words a bit. He stiffened in surprise and, he’d admit only to himself, slight fear when she leapt off the branch to land in front of him, graceful as any wildcat could have. “Who are you?” she asked. He’d had enough. He stood from the bench and began to walk away. “A person who gets annoyed very easily. Now go away!” “Wait!” she cried out. He turned, and cursed his curiosity of her plea. “Don’t go…I just…want a friend.” The voice, once childish, seemed older than he could fathom. It was a lonely voice and more than that, it was the most melancholy plea he’d heard. He shook his head. “We all do, princess, but I’m not in the mood for shenanigans.” “I don’t want shenanigans!” she protested. “Good for you,” he growled over his shoulder as he continued to retreat. This walk had been a stupid, stupid idea. The girl, who went by the name of Emma, leapt back into her tree and began to follow him by hopping from tree to tree, on all fours, similar to the way a jungle cat would travel through the trees. “Where are you going?” Emma asked. “Elsewhere from here,” Devario mumbled. He kept answering her questions, kept talking to her, despite himself. She annoyed the s**t out of him…but she was so interesting! It was like talking to a different species! “Why?” “Because I have to go elsewhere, that’s why! For god’s sakes, will you stop following me?” he burst out and turned on her, irritated. “And for a human being, by the way, you move like an idiot.” Emma did that familiar cocking of her head, like an animal staring at prey. “Is there something wrong with the way I move?” she inquired. “Why, yes,” he said in a falsely kind tone, “a normal person walks on two feet. You, however,” he reverted back to his crasser voice, “act like a ******** cat. Now go away.” He decided to start walking away from the trees, to better avoid her. He heard another gentle thud behind him as she propelled herself out of the trees and onto the ground. He looked over his shoulder, half expecting her to be walking on her hands and knees. But no, she was on two feet and still following him. “What’s wrong with being a cat?” she said inquisitively. “Cats are fun. Cats are happy!” She smiled. For whatever reason, it was the smile that drove him over the edge. “For the last time, I don’t care! Now go…the ********!” He turned away from her and headed up the dirt path leading to his cabin in the woods. He unlocked the door, went inside, and slammed it behind him. Emma sat there, unfazed for a moment. She shrugged. Maybe he was someone like Ellie…just a little bit rude, a little bit rough. No matter. She ran forward and pounced, landing with the lightest of noises on his roof. It was nice and warm from the sun that was beginning to set. She turned and laid down, curling up in a ball. It was very little time before she fell asleep. Devario, meanwhile, sat down on his couch and turned on his TV. He skipped right past the Animal Planet while surfing; he’d had enough animal-like weirdness for today.
A few hours later, around 1:30 in the morning, Emma woke from her sleep. The TV below her was still going strong, but she sensed that the person who had been watching it was out cold. She crept down off the roof and peered in through the window. Sure enough, he was conked out on the couch, snoring softly. Emma frowned. Surely he was cold! He needed a blanket. She spied one in the corner of his cabin and smiled. If only she could get inside… She rummaged through her black leather bag until she came up with a silver lock pick. Going to the door, she inserted the tiny metal rod and twitched it around in the lock until she heard the faint telltale click of the door unlocking. Grabbing the blanket in the corner, she carefully unfolded it and placed it over Devario’s body. He shifted, curling up under the blanket. She smiled. There. Now he could sleep comfortably.
