I've been wanting to get one since two months ago, with my mom's continuous promises of "soon".
I've read a s**t ton about goldfish, how many gallons one would need (and then how much per added goldfish), what they eat, how big they grow, cycling tanks, etc etc.
The sole reason I think my parents are reluctant to buy a fish tank is because of the price. But I keep trying to convince them that buying a used tank on kijiji is a lot cheaper, not to mention, there are a lot of things that come with what we see on people's ads (for a cheaper price) compared to new stuff at Petsmart.
I told my mom that goldfish get to a decent size, so having several in a 20 gallon tank would easily kill them. AND THEN SHE SAYS, "no we just need a 5 gallon tank". I followed by saying you were going to make them die a gazillion times faster by putting a s**t ton of goldfish in a tiny a** tank.
If we got a 20 gallon, we could get ONE goldfish. 29 gallons, you might get away with two. I don't think my parents are willing to spend more money on any tank bigger than 29 because a) we live in an apartment; huge tanks will cramp the place up. b) we want to save money anyway. STILL THOUGH, I REALLY WANT A PET FISH. :C ORANDA'S ARE SO ******** FAT AND ADORABLE.
And then I thought, hmm, maybe I shouldn't get goldfish. So I looked at some dwarf cichlids but they tend to like being in larger groups, I think? And 20 gallons doesn't seem okay for cichlids, even as dwarf cichlids. Maybe 29... I also thought of albino cory catfish. They're cute, but I don't know what other fish I could put into a 20 or 29 gallon with maybe a pair of cory catfish. I've never owned fish before, so I have very little knowledge in fish keeping to begin with. At least I know better than to put goldfish in a bowl, like what my mom believes we should do. /brick'd/ I wanted Angelfish as well, but I read that you need tall tanks because of their long fins. I think I'm going to buy a long tank, not a tall one... so.. They're out of the question.
