Smoker took me to the road I was driving down before. I was shocked on how fast
we got out of the fissure in the ice. I looked up at him, and then asked him one
simple question.
“Why are you helping me?”
He looked at me; I could not see his face, only a dim yellow glow where an eye
was. Then he responded.
“Love.”
Again, I told you I’ve never seen this guy before, but, what kind of response is love?
I gulped then continued to look for my Hummer. I began drifting off to sleep in Smoker’s arms, they felt safe to me, but before I could close my eyes I heard Smoker whispered to me
“Is that your car?”
In surprise, My Hummer didn’t leave its spot. I looked at Smoker and said
“You can put me down now, thank you”
He put me down and I darted towards Bill and tackled him.
“WHY IN BLOODY HELL DID YOU PUSH ME IN THAT FISSURE!?”
“AH! GET OFF OF ME!”
“TELL ME OLD MAN!”
“Okay! Okay! It’s the Apocalypse! B-but It’s a ZOMBIE Apocalypse!”
“I should’ve known, you’re a crazy old man making up stories so you can-
“He’s telling the truth.” Smoker Interrupted
“What!?”
“There is a Zombie apocalypse… I lost my family to it…”
I got up and helped Bill up then asked him
“Are there any other survivors?”
Bill nodded and replied
“I have three friends a couple miles away from here, we could go there if ya’ want.”
“Let’s do it.”
Bill walked over to Betsy whom I have left running.
“We’re going to need gas.”
I walked over to Betsy as well, but, Smoker just stood there. Bill saw me looking at
him and yelled to Smoker
“Are ya’ comin’, Lad?”
Smoker just looked at me the whole time, and then staggered towards us. Bill whispered to me
“Your boyfriend walks weird is he okay?”
I glared at Bill.
“He’s NOT my boyfriend”
Bill gave a soft chuckle.
“Smoker, why don’t you come with us? I mean look at you, you’ll freeze out here, it’s the least I could do”
“Okay…”
Smoker looked at our seating arrangements and frowned.
“I…I want to sit next to her…”
Bill looked at me
“I could take the wheel, so he’ll be quite on the way there.”
So, I got comfortable in the back seat with Smoker and let Bill drive.
I soon fell asleep due to the warmth and comfort…
I was awaken by Smoker’s voice
“…Hey wake up we’re here”
Bill was in the doorway with someone familiar to me. It was my dorm mate,
Zoey.
I jumped out to greet her, but she was first she ran up and hugged me.
“Kax! It’s been at least two years!”
“So it has, Zoey”
Zoey led me inside.
“You look exhausted! Would you like a hot bath?”
“That sounds amazing.”
I started to walk upstairs but remembered Smoker.
“Hey, Zoey? Could you get Smoker?”
“Uh…Okay…I guess”
I watched as Zoey walked out to the car, and then went to my bath.
After the bath, I went to the room I was given to stay in by Zoey. Smoker was
sitting in the room, sleeping in a chair against one of the walls. He was holding something, it looked like a picture. I walked over and carefully took it from him. I could not believe it, it was a picture of me and my friends in middle school. I put the picture back and got dressed. I picked up the book I was reading and continued reading.
“Oh, Talia, what happened to you? What killed you?”
It was about midnight when I finally fell asleep.
“Matt’s dead, Kax, he’s dead. Forget him; I love you more than he would ever be
able to think of.”
I woke up hyperventilating, and sweating. I looked over at my side, and saw Smoker nuzzled up next to me, face STILL hidden in that grey hooded jacket. I smiled.
“He got up and lay down next to me.”
I was soon enough, asleep again…
