Beans
A smooth marble bowl holds the meal of my choice:
Refried beans are filled to the brim.
There is a creaminess about them that coats the mouth and stomach
Like a soft suit of armor from the harshness of the world.
Lined with cheese and a hint of garlic, there is no warmer comfort.
And so have your hands given me this bowl,
Filled with the beans of Shakespeare and Smiley, Allen and Armitage.
Oh, never have I been so indulged in my life!
I hungrily consumed it all, but with every spoonful,
My cravings seemed only to grow.
Insatiable hunger may be a punishment for Dante;
I consider myself exceptionally lucky.
Happily unsatisfied, I take my leave-
You have fed me well, Mrs. Bean.
I hope to have you over for dinner one day.
