She looks out the bay window
Staring at the silvery reflection
Of the moonlight all over the
Snow covered ground.
It was so bright,
You could drive without headlights if you wished to.
There are no street lamps
Way out here in the country.
Only the tiny window lights
From tiny houses in the distance.
The woman is tired after being a mother all day.
She sits and rocks in her father's rocking chair,
Holding her baby boy in her arms,
Gently sending him to a land all his own.
And a four year old girl resting her head
In her mother's lap,
Quickly falling asleep as the mother strokes
The girl's head with her free hand.
The woman just sits there,
Staring, rocking, and stroking.
She falls into her own dream world
Without even knowing it.
She dreams of the perfect life,
Her children playing in the snow,
Cats wrestling together,
Birds chirping and squaking,
Dogs barking and bounding in a playful mood
At anything that moves,
A quaint little country house,
Not her own,
Barely getting by on the meager income she makes,
Divorced and never fell in love-dated-ever again.
Yet her family and herself couldn't be happier.
They all love each other,
Despite their many quarrels.
Some light,
And some incredibely dark.
Yet, they love.
The cats and the dog are treated
Like human members of the family.
The woman opens her eyes at the last image
Of her dream life.
Then she remembers,
Everything in that "dream"
Had happened that very day.
The dream ended with her sitting in her father's chair,
Staring, rocking, and stroking.
The mother smiles gently
And sets her sleeping children in their beds
To dream of their perfect world,
In their wintery yule dreams.
