I remember the first time that we ever
said I love you. I remember it like
it was a new toy, like it was Christmas
and we were excited children,
joyously tearing
at festive wrapping paper, finally unveiling our gift--
And staring in wonder at what we found.
I remember throwing I love you around like a brand-new football,
playing with I love you
like a meaningless, replaceable doll;
a mannequin, an effigy, something made only to be
thrown away.
I remember the leather on I love you fading.
And I remember when you tossed it in a box
and stored it away in the dark corner of the attic,
and told me that it was broken, lost, gone.
I remember loneliness.
I remember the fierce pain in my chest knowing
you threw my I love you away
