Laura lifted her eyes to see the fading gray of his jacket.
“Josh…Maybe we shouldn’t do this..” She said to the man climbing the fence in front of her.
“Come on,” Josh grunted as he reached the top and started to climb down the other side, “It’s the only way to feed Lily and Sunflower. And ourselves—gah.”
Laura worriedly looked at Josh as he landed and turned back to look at her, smiling with his winning grin.
“I don’t know if I believe that guy…” Laura tossed a wary glance at the man in camo waiting by his truck, barely discernable in the forest, “He said he’s trade us that bag of food if we got it for him, but….”
“Shh!” Josh scolded. He looked around in front of him into the thick forest, seemingly more alive than any forest they’ve traversed so far. Then, he stood still. “…I feel the bugs coming.”
Laura panicked.
After waiting a few seconds, she shakily whispered “Josh….we shouldn’t do this….come on….get back over here….please…..”
Josh glared at her. “Stop whining…..”
But, the minute he took his eyes off the eerie forest on the other side of the fence, the man by the truck smiled and started to get in his truck. This went un-noticed by the pair by the fence.
“Please – Josh!!” Laura gasped and fell back on her bottom, her hands and old blue jeans getting covered in mud. She watched as Josh screamed as the bugs came…eating his feet first, then his legs, then his whole body all at once. By the time his head was left, he was dead. They didn’t eat the head. His lifeless eyes looked at her, and Laura ran home.
Later, the man in camo would park his car, declare his success, and get paid.
