What makes everyone so hellbent on becoming a Moderator? Why does it appeal to the normal-level users so much? Let me just tell everyone now, that being a Moderator is probably NOT what you all think it is. Read this entire entry, then think long and hard about if you REALLY want to have a colored name on Gaia... And no, I will not now, or ever suggest you as a Moderator, so don't ask me. If you even ask, you obviously didn't read this.
This job is strictly volunteer. I get no check in the mail from Lanzer at the end of the week/month. It's stressful. enough to make you want to rip out your hair some days or cry on others, just like my other volunteer jobs that I work at. However, it's got it's moments when it's very rewarding, and I don't mean physical rewards, I mean emotionally and spiritually. Moderators exist to help, not to punish or to lord over the other users. It's no different than being a Guild Captain or Crew member.
There are responsibilities and rules as much as in every other job. It's not for profit. It's not for popularity or publicity. It's sure as hell not to have fun, though it can be fun at times because Gaia is a fun community no matter what your user level. Being a moderator is for GAIA and to help the other users of Gaia. If you want to be a moderator for any other reason, you want it for the wrong reason.
That's my two cents. I have no idea why I'm a moderator; I couldn't tell you what I did right, what I did wrong before I was noticed, or why they finally chose me. I don't want to know; and if I did know, I wouldn't tell anyone, because it's probably different for everyone, anyway. I'm just happy BEING one so I can help Gaia and make/keep it a fun place to post and a safe place to chat without the threat of flamers, trollers, or child molestors.
