'He's working late again,' Celine thought as she looked at the clock. There was only one visible hand on the face, and her heart sank into the swollen stomach. Midnight. If she stayed up any later, she'd be extremely tired at work. Not good for a doctor. Sorrowfully, she lay down and put out the light. "Your daddy better be around more for you," she said to her growing child before she fell asleep.
Reeve Tuesti was not, in fact, working late; he was currently paying for a gift for his wife's birthday. He felt bad that he wasn't home directly after putting in his usual overtime and setting up meetings with Rufus Shinra. Celine was nearing the end of her second trimester, and she had already had a few pains. She had assured him that she was fine, but it put him on edge. It was, after all, his first child she carried.
It was near 1 AM when Reeve slipped into the bedroom and found Celine asleep. He stripped himself of his clothing and got into bed beside her, carefully, in an attempt tp let her sleep. However, as soon as he was settled, she woke and looked over his shoulder at him.
"I thought you weren't going to be home tonight."
He kissed her forehead softly, placed his arm over her waist, and gently pulled her back against him. "I'm not going to leave you for long," he whispered soothingly. "Not when he's so close to coming." He was referring to their unborn son.
She sighed. "Then where were you?"
"You'll see in the morning." Softly he kissed her cheek. "Good night, and happy birthday."
Celine stepped into Rufus's office the next morning, fingering a silver pendent that hung around her neck. Its charm was a simple heart with a small diamond set in the center and flanked by emeralds. When Rufus acknowledged her, she skipped the formalities.
"I'm taking my maternity leave. I found a suitable replacement, and she should arrive within the day."
Rufus only nodded. Gavvy had given birth to their son Eric not too long before, and he knew her fatigue.
As Celine left, Reeve took her hand and kissed her. "I'm going to call in sick to work today."
Her eyes glinted. "You little demon!"
