PROLOGUE
Through the mansion the young girl ran, her feet carrying her as fast as they could. She went around a corner, tripping on her dress and falling to the floor, catching herself with the palms of her hands. An end table tipped and wobbled, crashing beside her. The vase on the table shattered, pieces going everywhere and anywhere.
The girl stood up, tears starting to flow, and went running once more. She looked back to see a middle-aged man, not able to see his facial features for the lights were all out. Fear coming to her eyes, the girl started running faster.
“Alice! You horrible girl!” the man roared, grabbing the girl. Alice kicked and screamed, hitting the man violently. Reaching out in front of her, she found another vase or sculpture of some kind. She smashed it against the man’s head, hating the sound of it breaking.
He dropped her and swore, grabbing the place that had been struck. Alice ran, leaving him there. She ran and ran for what seemed like hours, though it was only seconds, until she reached a room she had never seen.
It had a high ceiling and many windows, the moonlight pouring in and illuminating the bare space. Several paintings were leaning against a wall and a pile of books sat in a corner, but besides these objects there was nothing in the room. Everything looked untouched and in a place of perfection. Alice was surprised that she had never seen the room before; it was rather large and seemed like a nice place for her mother to hold parties.
“Father would never think to look in here.” she whispered as she slowly walked inside, looking around, feeling as if she needed to make sure no one else was there.
And, as she discovered, someone else was there.
A tall woman was by the window, her face turned to look outside. She had dark hair and her clothing was rather odd. Alice approached her, slightly afraid that a stranger was inside the house, and tapped on her shoulder.
The woman turned around. She had one silver eye and the other was a lavender color, both framed by long eyelashes. The color of her eyes was very strange, but Alice was stunned at the woman’s most unique features.
Cat ears and a cat tail, the same shiny black as her hair. They swayed side to side, proving that they were not at all fakes.
Her lips turning into a gentle smile the woman spoke, her voice soft, “Hello, I’m Cheshire. Would you like to... disappear?”
