Chapter 1: Into the Forest
Genna Patson was a nine year old, red headed, blue eyed, pink rose cheeked girl. Although the other girls around her loved to play double dutch and stuff like that. Genna, however, liked to explore. She would wonder off from her mother to explore around the market or she'd go into the basement and attic to pretend she was on adventures. There was one place Genna wanted to go. There was a forest just across the street from her home and by darn it she was going to get there. She would have explored it already but her mother was a very strict woman and really didn't let Genna out to play.

"Genna, stop running around the house!" "Genna, sit down, don't you dare get dirty." "Genna Patson you better get out of this back yard and wash up now!"

Today, however was the worst of them all. Today Genna's great Aunt Marisol was getting married. She was dressed in a light blue puffy dress with white puffs for sleeves and white stocking going up her legs.

"Ugh!" Genna said.

She looked at the white heels she had to put on. Absolutely not! She went into her closet and pulled out a pair of small black boots. You know what the worse part was? The wedding was at her house so she had to be on her best behavior. And she was a flower girl! Genna couldn't believe it.

"Genna, get down here! Guest are arriving!" her mother called from downstairs.

Genna rushed downstairs to where her mother was. "Mother, why is Aunt Marisol getting married again? What number is this?"

"Sixth dear, but let Aunt Marisol be happy. Where are those heels I bought you?"

"Upstairs."

"Why aren't they on your feet, Genna?"

"They're ugly."

"Go back up those stairs and put them on your feet."

Genna blinked those big pretty eyes at her mother. "Oh mother I don't like those. They make me look way to tall and big."

"But Aunt Marisol wanted you to wear them. Don't you want to make him happy?"

"Well, yes. But do I have to be flower girl? And why do I have to wear all these light colors."

"They look good on you."

"I suppose."

"Darling please! The wedding starts in - OH DEAR! We only have two minutes." Her mother said looking at her watch. She took a plate with Fish and Chips and rushed to the front door. "Sweetie," she called over her shoulder, "Could you please get that Pie Mash and bring it out? Then you need to change out of those shoes."

Genna took the pie and followed her mother. Everyone was seated and ready. After Genna put the pie on the food table she walked back into the house. Aunt Marisol was standing in the kitchen.

"Where have you been, Genna?"

"Oh, I was just taking the Pie out for moth-"

"NO! You will not ruin my wedding, Genna Patson! Oh dear, and those horrible shoes! Take them off! Take them off!"

"Okay, Okay!" said Genna walking for the stairs as the Here Comes the Bride song sounded from outside.

"No! No! Forget the shoes. Get those flowers and lets get a move on!"

Genna turned around and took flowers sitting on the dining room table.

"Go!" Aunt Marisol snapped.

Genna walked in front of her Aunt and outside to the on looking crowd who began to stand up. She threw a flower here and she threw a flower there. She looked out into the distant. The forest's trees leaned toward the wind. Oh how much she wished she could go in there.

"Throw the flowers!" Aunt Marisol snapped from behind her.

"Oh, yes, sorry." she said resuming her flower girl duties.

Flower here, flower there. Flower here, flower there. Flower here, flower there. Genna's eyes were still on the forest when the basket fell from her hands.

"You monster!" Aunt Marisol yelled to her.

"Genna! Pick up those flowers!" Genna's mother yelled from the crowd with Genna's little brother, Ruther, in her hands.

"Pick up the flowers child!" Aunt Marisol yelled at her again.

Genna turned to her aunt and simply said, "No."

Then she ran. She ran from the wedding and toward the forest. She could feel the eyes staring at her and hear the gasp and the whispering. She knew her mother was horribly disappointed and that she was going to get the worse yelling session from Aunt Marisol but who cares? She didn't. Genna ran and ran and finally reached the forest. She looked back at the wedding. Aunt Marisol stood there in her bride gown looking out toward her. Too bad Genna was too far away to see her face.

"Genna Patson, you get back to that wedding, now!" Her mother called running up to her.

Genna wasn't going to get caught. She said, "See you later, mother." and ran into the forest.
