Some jokes you either get or you don’t, there is no middle ground. For me, the avatar is joke. I mean look at these things, who is supposed to look at your avatar (any avatar) and say, “hey, this looks like the asexual, Halloween nightmare of responsible and professional person.” No one. So instead of trying to create an image of what we are, we try to present at least one facet of our selves via the avatar, mainly humor. Which is why, when I became aware of the avatar arena, I couldn’t resist the chance to share my [brilliant] humor with the rest of gaia. It went over much the way I expected to, people either got it, and gave me a great score, or they didn’t and informed me of my stupidity with a variety of grammatically incorrect comments.
My avatar was funny as a concept as well as in costume. I wanted a naked avatar. And I wanted a naked avatar for many reasons, the two most prominent being 1) I have no money/gold and, 2) I thought it would make a nice contrast the incredibly decorative and lavish costumes often found on the site. However, as the administrators of gaia routinely tell us, this is a PG-13 site. So full on nude was not an option.
this was my dilemma, how could I suggest nudity in a way that was both humorous and taste full? Now I don’t know about you, but when I think naked I think of women. And when I think of naked women, I think of sex. So sex was the key to my avatar. If I could make an avatar that made people think of sex (not a sexy avatar per say) then their minds would naturally take care of the rest and thus I would have my own unique, memorable and, above all, humorous avatar.
Of course, there was a huge, gaping hole in my plan. If my avatar was sexy then people would think of my avatar engaging in sex, not the act of sex its self, which is not funny. I needed to make an avatar that screamed sex, but, if he actually existed, would die a poor and pathetic virgin. To this end I turned to, what is perhaps the greatest romance of our time, Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo for inspiration.
***Brief Synopsis***
Deuce Bigalow is a hopeless loser doomed to an eternity of lonely nights due to a combination of below average looks, below average intelligence and above average body hair. However, when Deuce falls on hard times and is short on cash his friend (acquaintance) TJ does what any good friend would do… He pimps Deuce out to every other hopeless freak in town.
***Brief Synopsis***
I needed to make my avatar into a Deuce Bigalow, a man-whore to obvious to ignore, but to ridiculous to adore (sorry, I couldn’t resist).
But where to start? It’s not like PG-13 gaia has a pre-made man slut costume I can buy in a store. I had to use my own imagination, and, if you don’t already know, that’s ******** hard to do. I decide to start where my logic string left off (loosely), and (naked>naked women>sex) eventually became
naked>naked women>sex>Love>Valentines>hearts>chocolate.
and
naked>naked women>sex>pregnancy>poverty
I ended up using the path on the top. I decided I would make a foolishly romantic, but ********, Gigolo. Eventually, romantic took the form of 1 box chocolate hearts (whoda thunk?) and 1 pair heart boxers. ******** took the form of 1 crap hair cut and 1 out of place business tie. Once I put it all together I was ready to enter the arena.
And it went over much the way I expected it to, the people that got it, loved and the people that didn’t… didn’t. Overall I’m pretty pleased with my score, which is roughly a six. But I’d be pleased with a 2 as long as at least one person got a good laugh out of it.
