I finally came around to put this up!! blaugh 3nodding So, here's chapter 2 of Operation: Manifest Destiny ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Chapter 2: Karin
The hallways of Alexia are always filled with busy scientists and doctors, running around giving check ups and medicine to patients and running tests on new clones that they create. It’s always the same thing, day after day, hour by hour. It gets kind of boring just sitting here and watching them with fake interest. I look out the window of the room. I wonder what it’s like living life on Earth. I bet it’s probably more interesting than sitting here and listening to scientists run their mouths, about their newest clone, half heartedly. I’ll admit, the process is incredible, but hearing it every day since you were created gets tiresome after a while.
I get up and walk to the mirror. I look at myself, glaring at the ugly medical gown that I’m forced to wear. Why do I have to wear this? I can’t remember, not one bit. I take it off and walk out into the hallway. I earn myself a few screams and whistles. I don’t care; I only have one destination, his office. As I walk towards the end of my journey, almost reaching for the door, someone calls out my name.
“Karin!” I heard a man yell.
I let out a sigh, because I know that heavily German accented voice anywhere.
“Karin.” He says again, a bit softer than the last.
“Yes?” I ask as he approaches me.
“What are you doing?” he asks of me, looking at the view in front of him. “I thought I told you to wear the dress-“
“That pathetic excuse for clothing?” I ask him, my voice reaching a lower octave. “You know I despise that thing, Dr. Himmelreich.” I glance at him through the corner of my eye.
“At least it covers you,” Dr. Himmelreich says as he looks down at me.
“Pervert.” I reply as I turn around and knock on the door.
“Don’t bother him.” Dr. Himmelreich warns. “He’s busy.”
“I don’t care,” I reply as I hear a faint “Come in.”
I open the door and see a man sitting at his desk, busily typing away at his laptop. I walk inside, followed by Dr. Himmelreich who seems to be a bit worried. As we take our seats in front of the desk, the man looks up and greets us with a smile.
“So, what brings you here, Karin?” He asks, curiosity glimmering in his green eyes.
“When are you going to send me to Earth?” I ask, shifting uncomfortably due to the fact that Dr. Himmelreich was still glaring at me.
“Hmm,” He says more to himself. “I don’t know, whenever Dr. Himmelreich thinks you’re ready.”
“But he-”
“She’s not ready, Alexander.” Dr. Himmelreich blurts out instantly. “She can’t even follow a simple order to wear a medical gown, let alone destroy the enemy.”
I glare at him. “I am too ready!” I retort with a huff. “Just because I don’t want to wear that ugly, disgusting thing doesn’t mean that I can’t follow orders.” I crossed my arms and sat in the comfortable plush chair.
“You know,” Alexander said. “She does have a point.” He pauses and looks at me. “Alright, I think you’re ready to head to Earth.” I nearly jumped up, as Dr. Himmelreich almost fell out of the chair. “On one condition.” I look up, his green eyes meeting my grey ones. “You must obey your orders, and cooperate with your partner.”
I stare at him blankly, comprehending his words in my mind. “A partner?” I ask. “Why do I need a partner?”
“Why would we send you to Earth without one?” Dr. Himmelreich asks me, a smirk appearing on his face.
“Because you trust me and love me.” I said, my voice sounding sickly sweet and my eyes filled with affection.
“You must have a partner because the responsibility is far too great for one person.” Alexander says as he gets up from his desk and walks over to his glass wall. “That is why we clone two people at a time, so if we lose two, they can be replaced.”
I shivered at the thought, but I shouldn’t have. I knew the possibilities of surviving and carrying out the missions were highly unlikely. Besides, they would still use my organs to save her life, whether I’m live or not.
The memory of the girl that I was created from escaped into my mind. That poor fifteen year old girl, I think she was fifteen, lying in that hospital bed, barely able to breathe. A tear escaped my eye and I quickly shook the image away.
“Karin?” Alexander asks me. “You know what you must do, right?”
I look down and ball my hands into fists. “Yes.” I say through clenched teeth. “I’m to make sure nothing like that ever happens to anyone else.” I look up, my eyes full of determination, at Alexander.
He smiles at me. “Good,” He replies. “I knew I could count on you.” He walks over to the door and opens it. “Now then,” he says, “how about we go get you suited up and find a partner for you?”
My eyes twinkle with glee just because I’m imagining about getting new clothes, actual clothes that don’t smell like a hospital room. I practically skip out the door of Alexander’s office, a defeated Dr. Himmelreich behind me. I over hear Alexander and Dr. Himmelreich talk about how I’m not possibly ready for battle.
“No, I believe she can do this.” Alexander says. “After all, she’s the clone that we promised to take care of.”
“Yes, but we created her.” Dr. Himmelreich argues. “Don’t you think that there’s a possibility that she might be like her, and be too trusting?”
Alexander pauses for awhile. “Well, if we weren’t so trusting,” Alexander says as he walks to catch up to me. “Would you have thought that I would be able create Alexander’s Treaty?”
I didn’t hear Dr. Himmelreich reply to that question, and I didn’t want to hear anymore of their conversation. I was imagining about my new clothes, my new uniform. I had seen other clones wear them before, each uniform a different color that matched the specific clone. I had wanted one ever since I saw it, and I was jealous when I saw the other clones wearing theirs. I stop in front of the uniform storage, Alexander and Dr. Himmelreich behind. I look at them and Alexander gives me a nod telling me that I can go inside.
