Alena dropped her shoes and purse on the floor by the front door. "Now there is my favorite niece!" said a voice. "And your only one," answered Alena automatically and sidestepped an incoming hug without even looking up. A glance showed her uncle. Perverted old man..... Alena shivered. last time he was here, she was about eight years old and she, while rooting in his suitcase, found a shoe box. Thinking tha6t her present might be in it she opened it. And low and behold she had found her uncle's "candy box". Meaning it was full of porn. Scarred for life that's what I am Alena started to inch away from her overly excited uncle. He was rubbing his hands. "Where should we go first do you think?" he grinned. "Oh I know! lets go get ice-cream!" Alena stared at the insane person in front of her, turned, slipped on her sneakers and ran down the block. "Ho ho! You can't get away that easy," her uncle yelled behind her. His footfalls were coming closer. She fell into panic and ran at top speed. Get away from me!!!!! She turned the corner and crashed against a body. Why do I always have to fall down?! She looked across and saw....

Alena stretched her arms and looked again at the array of clocks. I hate this. This one's too ugly, this one's too big, this too small, this one's a rip off, this one is too expensive... Someone bumped into Alena's back. She turned around and it was a boy in black rimmed glasses. He held a large cardboard box. Something clicked. Now I remember the guy who Drew bumped into and made all those papers go flying. It's the guy in my math class and the one who works here for a part time job. "Hello. Remember me?" she asked him. He stared at her. Okay, weird. What was his name again? Harry? Harold? Harvard? "Henry right?" asked Alena reaching out her hand. As if in a dream, the boy named Henry reached out his hand too and the box, from the imbalance fell to the floor. Henry blushed a dark red. "Sorry," he mumbed. Alena laughed. "Why apologize when you did nothing wrong?" Henry blushed a darker shade of red. "So," said Alena stooping down to pick up the box. "Hup, this is heavy, what's in it?" Henry carefully took the box from her. "Easter decorations" he muttered turning away. "Oh that's right," wondered aloud Alena. "I completely forgot that Easter is coming up next month. Why are stores always prepared for any kind of holiday two months early?" Henry didn't say anything. Alena watch him lumber away with the box. Looking like a blade of grass bending under the weight of dew. Alena shook her head and went back to selecting a clock. I guess I should get the bunny and egg one. I'd probably break it in time for Easter any way...

The alarm clock went off but Alena's eyes felt glued shut. "Oh shut up!" she yelled swinging her arm at the sound. An imact with her hand and the a loud crash. Alena opened her eyes and turned her head to where the crash had sounded. The alarm clock lay in ruins on the floor, its gears spilling out. The door opened and Crystal looked in, looked at Alena, then at the alarm clock, rubbed her temples and left without a word. Samuel walked in. He looked at the mess. "Thank god I'm not the one who has to wake you up." He looked at Alena. "Congrats, you have executed yet another of your trumpeters your highness. Now what do you plan to do on such a lovely Saturday morning? Perhaps behead one of your ladies in waiting?" Alena threw a pillow at him. Samuel retreated through the door. "May I suggest the lovely lady Barbie. Her perfection creeps me out," Samuel's voice sounded through the door. "OUT!" "Bye!" sang Samuel. Alena groaned. Now she would have to use the day clock hunting. Excellent...

Alena lay in bed trying to figure out what had happened that night and how she really felt. It had just happened so fast. Her head hurt so much from crying and confusion. Her heart was in turmoil. What can I do? If we start going out then it can only be for a very short time. After that we would only be ripped apart. Alena sighed and closed her eyes. If only something like this had happened before and he wasn't moving! Then there would be some point in all of this! Alena got up. She couldn't stay still. I guess I'll go get some water.... Alena quietly opened the door and tip toed down the hall. The parent's bedroom door was open. She peaked inside. Crystal lay there in her night gown, hair still wet from washing and tangled. She hugged a pillow tightly. "John...." murmered Crystal in her steep. Alena quickly stepped back, almost tipping over the small table behind her and crashing the vase. Alena caught the eight thousand dollar vase but with her hands full couldn't do anything about the table falling over and making a large thump sound on the carpeted floor. Alena quickly righted it and set down the vase and looked into the room again. Crystal stirred in her sleep and turned over but thankfully didn't wake up. Alena wiped the cold sweat off her forehead. That was close. Looks like dad has taken off again. Alena started to silently walk down the steps. Thank goodness she didn't wake up and that we don't have one of those staircases like they have in the movies that creak and groan everytime you take a step. Alena had reached the bottom and walked to the kitchen. She took down a cup from the cupboard, placed the cup under the spout in the refridgerator and had ice cold water fill the cup. Alena placed the cup to her forehead, thankful for the coolness. She brought the rim to her lips and started to sip when- "Alena?" Alena spurted out the water. She looked to the side and saw Samuel standing there, looking at her with wide eye. "Wow. Can you do that again-" "Quiet," hissed Alena. "Don't wake up Crystal. And don't scare me like that. You probably took off ten years of my life!" "I doubt it. You were late though. Crystal cried herself to sleep again you know." "Again? God! Why can't dad get over mom's death?" Alena sat down on a stool, her head in her hands. "I wouldn't know why since I never met her and is not my mom but she must have been one heck of a woman." "Yeah, dad was crazy abut her. Wait a second! Your only five years old! Where did you learn the word heck?" "Drew's dad always says he's wife is one heck of a woman," answered Samuel, shrugging his little shoulders. "Yeah, you're right, he always says that..." There was a strange silence. Samuel leaned against the wall and sighed. "Why can't dad love Crystal the way he loves your mom?" "Because he still hasn't gotten over her death!" Alena was the one who sighed this time. "I know what you mean though. Eight years already and he still hasn't gotten over the fact that she's dead and wouln't come back. I was only six years old when the accident happened and I understood that. Wish he'd come back to reality and us..." Samuel studied Alena with his dark eyes. "Umm... what are you looking at Sammy?" "Samuel not Sammy. I keep telling you. But you look alot like my mom and that lady in the picture- your mom." Alena looked thoughtful for a moment. "Yeah, you're right we do look alike. Do you think..." "Yep. Sadly enough, our dad married my mom because she reminded him of your mom-" "But Crystal's not my mom and can never be. Crystal's like fire while my mom was like water. The b*****d! The reason why he's never home is because my mom's "replacement" isn't mom's clone!" Samuel hushed Alena. "You're getting loud." "Hey don't hush your betters!" "Sure, sure. Whatever," yawned Samuel. "Anyway," said Alena taking Samuel's hand and leading him to the door. "It's past your bedtime." "One more question then," mumbled Samuel. "Yeah? What is it?" asked Alena. Some movement caught the corner of her eye from up the stairs. She looked up and it was a woman's outline rushing away. Crystal, did you wake up? how much did you hear? Samuel dragged his feet so Alena picked him up and walked up the steps carring him. "What was your mom's name again?" Alena didn't say anything untill she had placed Samuel into his bed. "Her name was Maria," whispered Alena. But Samuel had already fallen asleep.

Red eyed and exahsted they walked hand in hand down the dark road to the bus stop. Drew looked to Alena and in mock seriousness said, "What happens at old man stays with old man rock. If the guys at school find out I cried like that, I'll never hear the end of it." Alena laughed. "Your secrets safe with us, don't worry. I cried like a baby and would face the same embarrassement if anyone at school found out and the old man doesn't like to blab. Our lips are sealed," Alena said, elbowing Drew's side. "Only thing wrong with that is that old man rock doesn't have any lips!" They both laughed in relief more than anything. They had reached the bus stop. "Imagine that we just made it. If we were left behind then the boogie men would have have gotten us or if we're fast enough, chase us all the way home," laughed Drew. "Never fear I'll protect you!" said Alena mock flexing her arm muscles. "Just let them try and get us. I feel like I could beat up a hundred- no! A thousand!" Drew held his stomach in laughter. "I don't doubt you couldn't!" Two spotlights apeared from the way they had just come from. They both shielded their eyes. As it came closer, it became ovious that it was the bus. "Well here's our ride!" Drew yelled over the screaching of the breaks. The doors folded inwards. "Ladies first," said a bowing Drew complete with the wave of a hand. "Thank you," curtsied Alena, walking towards the open doors. Drew caught here arm before she stepped in. "Scout's honor you won't tell anyone what happened tonight?" "Scout's honor," promised Alena. "And I never break a promise."

"Ahh. Now this is the life!" Drew was spread out on the grass. An empty paper plate laid besides him. Alena sat nearby on a large boulder. Almost twice her height in its width and when standing up, it was up to her waist in its height. "The stars look really bright today." Alena's voice was muffled through a mouthful of pizza. "Yeah..." Drew looked wonderingly up at the sky. The sky sparkled in a million places. They had taken a extra cheese and mushroom pizza to go and taken the bus for about an hour to come up here. They had laughed and talked about stupid things like why do we stop growing when we reach a certain age while trees and plants seem to never tire and just keep on going to reach the sky. Why are we forced to edure such things as headaches and so on. Drew seemed pretty happy. But Alena wondered if he had really forgotten what was troubling him so much. It still felt as if something was holding back a part of him so that he couldn't be himself to the fullest. Drew sighed and sat up. "Guess I really should tell you this," Drew said, not taking his eyes off the sky. "I've put it off long enough, God knows that. You Remember how I left for a vacation to Canada last summer at the recomendation of my mom's doctor so she could unwind?" "Of course I remember. I have a stack of letters from you jammed into every nook and cranny of my room that I could find. I wouldn't recomend you to go away again since my room will now forever and ever be one huge mess." Drew laughed. "You can throw them out you know. Most of them are just me blabbing on about how Sparky scratched his ear or what flowers I saw that day. I was sooo bored." Drew grinned at Alena. His eyes glinted off the light of the stars. Does he have tears in his eyes? Drew had quickly sobered and was staring off into space again. "The thing is... Mom loved it there. She looked completely different. She still thinks about being there and misses it. I saw her crying in the kitchen. My dad then came in and held her. She told him how she wants to back. She wants to get away from here." Alena felt a sinking feeling in her stomach. Drew pulled a handful of grass from the ground. Alena couldn't see his face as he got up and started walking towards Alena. He stood in front of her for some time. I was as if someone had stopped time. Alena held her breath, and looked up into his face. "I'm moving." And just like that, something in Alena broke. Tears spilled down her cheeks. Drew held her face and his lips touched hers. They were salty and wet. "I love you." "I know." They cried for now it was too late. It was impossible for them to be together now. Long distance relationships never work out.

"Guuugghhh. Teachers must really hate us. Why else torture us with this kind of homework? I mean look at this! I could swear it's a different language!" Alena held out the geometry worksheet. Pointing out impossiblitites on the paper to Drew. They walked side by side down the street to the pizza place. Drew said nothing. He hadn't really said anything during the encounter so far except for a quiet greeting and nodding from time to time. "So Drew... what's on your mind?" inquired Alena. "Looks like it's something heavy. It might take a load off if you tell me." "Huh? Oh.... nothing. Nothing at all." Drew was startled from staring into space and tried to smile reasuringly. It wasn't exactly working though. Alena stopped walking and Drew looked back at her. They stayed about three meters apart. Alena decided to ask him the question. "Drew? We've known each other since we were kids right? You could at least tell me what's wrong." "Nothing's wrong! Why do you imedietly assume that I have a problem!" Drew was really distressed. He was a good actor and to an outsider it might have looked like he was telling the truth but Alena knew better. "As if! You could cut this tension with a knife! What happened to you last summer? Don't you trust me?!" Alena was now close to tears. "Do you trust me Alena?" There was something in the way Drew had said that. It was so forceful. He seemed so hurt and uncertain. Alena looked down at her sneakers. "I'm sorry," she whispered. "I do trust you but I can't stand to see you hurt." Alena started to tremble as the tears started to flow. "I'm sorry too and that makes me feel better that you feel that way but for tonight, lets just have fun like the good old times." Drew said in a softer voice. "I'll tell you later when I feel the time is right. Not now. I want to just forget for a while. Okay?" "Alright," Alena sniffled. "But I need to know." "Then come on, let's get a move on or else the pizza place is going to be packed and we'll have to get take out." "That would be nice though," said Alena wiping her eyes. She smiled and took Drew's arm. "We should go eat by old man boulder." "Why not? I've not seen that old chap for what feels a hundred years!"

Alena lugged her school bag through the halls of Markowski High School. She opened her locker and put in her coat. The locker door slammed on her hands. Alena took a sharp intake of air at the sudden pain. "Oopps. Oh so sorry. I didn't see you there," said a voice sarcastically. A pair of arms reached out and pushed Alena down. She looked up, rubbing her hands. A crowd started to gather around the lockers. They all looked down at her, whispering to each other. "Oh hello Christie," Alena said forcing a grin. "Your face doesn't seem at all tired from all that smirking and looking down your nose at people. It probably froze that way a long time ago and you never knew the difference." Alena got up and dusted off the black dress she was wearing. "Tch. Now you got my dress all dirty..." A chorus of ooohing and one "Oh she dissed you good!" made Christie flush in embarrassment. "We-w-well... your ugly," stuttered Christie. "And your an immature idiot if you think that could hurt someone like Alena." Alena turned around as did about twenty people. The voice was coming from behind her and from the mouth of a boy walking down the hall towards the crowd. Everything about him screamed casual! From his lopsided grin to his clothes and his walk. He walked as if he owned the place. He kind of does own the school though. Alena tried not to giggle. I knew him for almost all my life and even when we were young he was like this. All the girls were always screaming after him. He was always popular. And I still can't get over his personality. "Hey Drew," Alena smiled. Drew's grin widened and his eyes sparkled. "It's nothing," he laughed, acwardly rubbing the back of his head. He cleared his throat and straightened his back. "Okay! Nothing to see here guys! Move your asses to class!" Christie glared at Alena. If only looks could kill eh Christie? If only we could go back to the way we were before. Christie brushed by Alena's shoulder roughly. "It's your doing that Drew is clumsy around you," Christie whispered to Alena before giving a quiet "hey" and call me sign to Drew and a melting smile that a group of boys passing by observed jeously. Drew shrugged his shoulders at Alena. Alena grinned at him. Christie never could get her claws firmly into Drew. Drew coughed and said in a deep voice, "Um, wanna meet up after school to hang out? I'd really like to talk to you." Ahhhh. Trying to be manly now are we? Well two can play the same game. Alena flipped back her hair and said in a huskey voice, "I don't know if I'll show up but wait for me at the corner." Alena arched her eyebrow and smiled. "Okay! That's great!" Drew grinned goofishly, turned around and smacked into a boy in glasses carrying a large stack of papers. "Oh, I'm so sorry! Let me help you with that!" Drew started to catch the flying papers out of mid-air. The boy in glasses got on his knees but stopped, his hand reaching out for a slip of paper, his eyes glued onto Alena. Alena walked to class thinking, I know that kid from somewhere... Anyway, why the heck am I always flirting with Drew whenever I meet him?

Alena was about to start dinner. Hmmmmmmm... Hamburgers sound good... Alena looked into the freezer. No hamburger patties. Oh well. Hot dogs yet again I guess.... Alena took out the the single package in the freezer. A scream sounded. Alena sighed. There she goes again. Probably saw her own reflection. Alena snickered. "ALENA COME HERE!" Alena frowned. What did I do now? She walked into the bathroom. There Alena found her stepmother gripping the edge of the tub's edge. "What did you do to my shoes girl?" Crystal picked up the shoe from the basin, the water rushing in a small waterfall as it was lifted into the air. The sole fell off and splashed into the water below. Crystal glared at Alena and looked as if trying to restrain herself from leaping at her. Alena grimmanced. Now she was in trouble. "I'm sorry mother. I didn't know that your shoes would fall apart when wet like that-" "Now you know. And you will have to also buy me new shoes-" "Mom... Dad's here," interupted Samuel. Crystal let the rest of the shoe drop from her hand. She straighted out her blouse, took a deep breath and walked into the hallway. Here we go again thought Alena. Another attempt by Crystal to get my dad to notice her. Another failure and then another reconcilation in her lover's arms. We've been through this before. Alena walked out of the bathroom to see her father walking quickly towards the basement door. "Sorry dear, but I have work to do." It 's as if he's making a break for it. Alena's heart throbbed. Does he hate us so much that he doesn't want to look at us? "So the man of the house has decided to make an appearance today. What happened? Forgot a paper? That's impossible 'cause you're never home to leave anything behind. You already packed up and left," Alena said in a sarcastic tone. "Alena! Don't talk to your father that way," exclaimed Crystal. "Your father does his best to bring food to the table and this is how you treat him?!" Alena's father stopped with his hand on the door and turned around. Yes! got his attention at last! thought Alena. "Don't listen to her John-" started Crystal but Alena's father interupted her. "I'm so sorry." He then turned the knob and practically flew down the steps into the darkness of the basement, the door slamming behind him. His presence gone yet again. No! Don't go! Alena burst into tears and ran up the stairs to her room. As she turned on the landing, she saw her stepmother looking shocked, not moving, standing in place. As Alena shut the door to her room she thought You're just like me. You just want him to notice you but he's too caught up in the past. That's why you have had so many affairs but he still doesn't see you...
