I'm bored, so I figured, why not?
*Please note: don't take this too seriously. If anyone does they'll just be a kill-joy.*
Anyway, for this one, I'm going to do Twilight. *Insert ominous music*
I must be blunt: I hate this book. With a passion that burns with the white-hot intensity of a thousand suns. I hated it so much, in fact, that I couldn't even bring myself to finish the whole thing. You have to understand that this is a rare event. I've had other books I didn't like at all, and yet still somehow managed to slough through them.
Ex: Uglies. I really didn't like this book. Pretty much all the characters are stuck-up, shallow, unthinking CREATURES, except the female lead, who, toward the end screwed up so BADLY and acted so thoughtless she may as well have been a Pretty(but oh DUR, that's a 'good' thing in this book, until she found out something and was like, "OMG, NO!" wink . I'm not going to go into more detail here about my likes and dislikes. The point I want to make is that, despite what seemed to me at some points to be major gaps in logic, I was able to finish it. I felt the the book was well-written enough so that I could make myself read it until the end, so I could at least say, "I honestly gave it a chance, but still didn't like it."
Twilight evokes no such feelings.
I can get over what I personally think are idiotic 'new' takes on things. I.e., sparkly vampires. By her description, that's more of a faerie(yes, I spelled it THAT way). I get that she wanted something new, I understand, really. But it seems to make no sense. Some people will cry 'suspension of disbelief.' Even that has its limits. Moving on. Her name. I think it SCREAMS 'future stripper.' (No disrespect to any strippers out there. Well, classy ones.) Now, the stalking. There is now WAY that he cannot be called a stalker. But you know, people only stalk because they love you, right? "It's not stalking, it's selective walking!" Yeah. Because freaking the hell out would be an abnormal reaction. Also, the whole getting attacked then rescued. Yes. It is smart to wander around in a place you've never been to. And it's also not like going back the way you came might be a good idea or anything. And yes, that was sarcasm. HEAVY sarcasm.
What's honestly the main reason I hate this book? It's badly written. It just is. I could get over those other glaringly obvious flaws had it been presented in a more logical and realistic way. It's fiction, you say? Even that, on a certain level, has to be believable. It does. Bella's constant whining in no way made be feel sympathetic for her, especially if it was based on her OWN decision. She is not special. The world does not owe her anything. John in the book You Don't Know Me got beat on by his mom's boyfriend and HE complained less than she did.
Overall, the plot is dull and cliche('I-Love-You-But-We-Can't-Be-Together!!!' Hm. Where have I read that before...), the characters are insipid(Edward just got on my nerves and Bella makes me disgusted to be the same sex), and the book just feels like it was written by an angsty, delusional thirteen-year-old who feels like she isn't given enough attention.(...<---That pretty much says it all right there)
I had high hopes for this book. I wanted to like it. I REALLY did. But it just wouldn't let me.
To wrap this thing up(I know someone would read this and go "Tl;dr." wink on a high note, here are some vampire books/books that contain vampires I DO enjoy: -Blood Price, by Tanya Huff -Companions of the Night, by Vivian Vande Velde(this is a bit iffy, because the female protagonist didn't seem to think through some of her decisions and "SHE'S A TEENAGER" doesn't excuse doing something idiotic) -Nightwatch, by Sergei Lukyanenko(it's not really about vampires. But vampires are it. And it's a good book, if a bit emo and slow-paced at times, and ANTON. You could do sooo much better than Svetlana. Like me, for instance. j/k) -Night Road, by A.M. Jenkins(Sandor is LOVE; it can also be emo and slow-paced at times, but come on. It's three guys on a road trip. And I think one of the real reasons a friend of mine didn't like it is that it's not vampire ROMANCE. *Gasp*! -Chronicles of the Necromancer, by Gail Z. Martin(she's got some pretty cool vampires; I can't decide whom I like more, Mikhail or Gabriel. Also, I think her writing could use some work, but I wouldn't say it's bad. Perhaps I spent too much time reading fantasy from 50+ years ago.)
Also, if you don't agree, that's fine. Tell me why you DO like it and why it IS a good book. Feel free, and maybe someone will be able to get me to have another go at it. ^____^
