Hand of the week
I was in Los Angeles last weekend and decided to go to Commerce Casino to play some no limit holdem. The casino is quite a bit larger than the poker room I normally play in. I definitely had a small town guy going to big city feel.

First to note about the setting is that there are a few players at the table who like to brag about their poker skills a lot and criticize other player's play. This is good for me as I can get a sense of their thinking process for free. Sometimes after a bluff I would tell them that they made a good fold and speak in their language of how it makes so much sense for folding. One other thing to note is that one guy is pretty drunk and have a big stack of cash in the wallet. I am sure a couple of guys, including me, are eager to play with him in a big pot.

game: $200 buy in no limit
blinds: 3 small/ 5 big
stack: ~$500
position: cut off

A guy who has been pretty hot lately raised to $35. The loaded drunk guy called and started to declare war against the raiser. I tag along with a call and hope to hit a set.

Flop:

The raiser is first to act. He bets out $50, which is a very small bet in his standard. Last few times when he hits a top pair he would bet all in. In fact, this guy seems to bet all in any time he thinks he has the best hand on the flop and rarely slow play. Thanks to the drunk guy calling him down many times we got the info. I put this guy on two big cards and misses this flop. As I am waiting for my turn to raise him, the drunk guy calls very quickly. Now I am not as certain because this drunk guy is calling the raiser every hand, even sometimes with nothing. With the two hearts on the board I think he might be on a flush draw or 89 open ended. At this point the pot gets to about $205 and $255 if I call. I call with the hope to spike a 6 or if a blank comes and they go check check on the turn I will bet a big amount and take down the pot.

The raiser bets $50 again. This bet is even weaker than the previous, confirming my previous assessment of his two big cards. With about $120, the drunk guy goes all in. At this point the pot is about $425 and it costs me $120 to win it. I am fairly sure I got the original raiser beat and not convinced that the drunk guy beats me. I called, and the original raiser, with only $70 more for him, calls behind me. River comes

The drunk guy screamed yes, so I know I am dead now. He probably has a 8, making a straight. The original raiser paused for a while and check. I check behind because there is no point for me to bet. Now the show down

Well as you can see, the drunk guy rivered the best hand, taking down the pot.

Reviewing this hand I think I made a couple of mistakes. A pair of 6s in a three way pot is not strong enough to make a call on the flop. I should have either raise or fold. I have to say if I were not in a tourist mode I would probably fold. So given that I am in a tourist mode and want to play, I should have raised the flop and probably take down the pot, but who knows. The drunk guy might call me anyway as he already declared war against the original raiser, showing some strength.

Anyway, the nice pot goes to a drunk guy who loses it back to another player 3 hands later.

My night concluded with only ~$150 profit, even with this easy table. I felt not quite satisfied. We had other traveling plans the next day, so that was it.
