Every day the shining woman woke from the tower of dark marble and descended. The garden around it was untended, and the rock pathways were disheveled; her feet were always bare. And they would bleed every day as she walked the long way to the edge of her Wild Garden to press her hands against the high fences and peer at the men and women outside.
Every morning she would ask,
"Has the world seen peace yet?"
And they always said no, but no one was quite sure. So she walked all the long way back to her tower of dark marble. By now it was nighttime, and the shining woman would sleep again, until morning.
