Well, where to start. . .
This one's been rather preoccupied by the recent hurricane hitting the area. More accurately, thinking about the slow restoration of electricity and the interruption of the normal routine (particularly hanging out with friends) has been eating up a lot of processing space.
Still, it's been good to see the locals helping themselves rather than waiting for someone to come in and assist. As soon as it was safe to set foot outside, people were out clearing their lawns of debris, making repairs, assessing damage, offering assistance, etc. Does a heart good to see. Doesn't hurt that the local businesses are as eager to get back on track as the residents, some opening doors the day afterward even without power.
Not saying this sort of thing brings out the best in people. If some of the loons at the gas pumps are any indication, it just made self centered people even more self centered. People showing up at the pump with mostly full tanks to just top off, making people with cars running on empty wait; some isolated incidences of price gouging (promptly remedied); other reports of idiots and desperate fools fighting over gas. . .
Guess Ike destroyed more than property. Or perhaps some people were already as empty of spirit as the coastal towns are now empty of life? Who knows?
