On Sunday, September 30th, 2007, a boy in our school named Kas Sanders was hit by a car while riding his bike with a friend. He was pronounced dead at the scene. This happened less than a mile from my house, and I was coming home from my friend's (Stephanie [westleyluvr482 on gaia]) and saw the paramedics, fire trucks, and police officers there, not to mention the figure on the ground covered by a blanket. I personally knew Kas, and he used to tease me and another one of my friends about being short, even though he was about a head shorter than we were. He was a fun-loving kid and he wanted to be an FBI agent when he grew up.
Everyone at our school was affected by this, and what makes the situation worse is th fact that Kas was hit in the crosswalk just outside the school. In some classrooms, if you look out the window, you can see the memorial set up there. On Monday, the day after Kas was hit, many kids opted to not even come to school. This week was spirit week, and one of the spirit days, Pink Day, was changed to Purple Day, since Kas's favorite color was purple.
What's amazing is that Kas saw the car coming, and shouted out a warning to his friend, saving his friend's life while giving his own. The man who hit him also lives in this town, and has now been booked for a D.U.I. for being under the influence of perscription drugs, and is being charged with manslaughter. What really pains me is that the man is the uncle of a girl who is a sort of friend and has also been on multiple soccer teams with me.
Today, coming home from school, I heard sirens and found myself hoping that it wouldn't turn down our road. Who wouldn't hope that? I later found out that someone's stove had caught fire, and the fire department and an ambulance was dispatched automatically. No one was harmed and I thank God for that.
In Loving Memory
Kas Sanders
