Lanzer's Journal
Gaia back then, Gaia today, and Gaia tomorrow (part 1)
It's been a long night working on the different aspect of the site, and to wrap things up, I want to update my journal with a quick re-cap of where we're at and where we're heading. With so many things happening around Gaia, I'm sure many of you had been wondering about this. First, let's take a quick trip down memory lane:

Gaia back then
--------------
When Gaia first started, there were 4 guys working on the entire site. One programmer worked day and night trying to build servers, keep the site running fast and build features at the same time. Site would go down all the time, and pages took forever to load. This impossible feat lasted for less than a year until Gaia members offered to donate to Gaia, and the rest was history. With users supporting Gaia's development, we were able to have more engineers in the team, and within half a year, there were 7 developers building features. Finally, we can improve the forum, build marketplace, make better holiday events, and keep the website running all at the same time. Later we were able to build games and Gaia Towns also, as we expand up to around 15 developers. As the site grows, we have all new challenges towards supporting an un-precidented amount of users at the same time. We had twice as many staff members, but maintaining the site took much more people than before. So we kept growing our team in order to do more.

As a team building Gaia, we wish to do more in a shorter amount of time. This requires us to hire even more developers. Gaia had around 45 people when we decided that we need to have more than a hundred people to build all the features that we need in a timely manner. Just having a hundred people alone will cost a lot, not to mention all the other expenses. At this point, we found a few investors to help us handle the burdon some of the cost so we can grow faster. To make things sound more simple, we borrowed some money so that we can grow faster. Gaia makes a healthy amount of money from monthly collectibles, but that alone can't sustain a large team.

Two paragraphs is definitely not enough to round up everything that happened in the past 5 years, but that was pretty much a general overview. My next entry will go over some of what we're currently focused on and where we're headed.

For those who are interested in "just how much does it cost to run Gaia?", the brief answer is "roughly 1.5M a month". There are many factors involved. From the number of people in Gaia, which counts for most of the expenses, followed by the cost of bandwidth, equipment, rent, and a huge list of items. In the world of websites, we are spending more because Gaia is so big and we build a ton of features. However, companies like Facebook uses even more money. Check out this article for an example. (Facebook article)

Seeing numbers in millions might sound scary, but if you divide that by the number of people in the whole team (Gaia HQ has 110 full time people), things might start to make sense. Note that people don't walk out with a load of cash every month, people get paid like everyone else in other companies, which means a lot of the cost go towards things like health insurance and other hidden cost that all companies in the USA are required to handle.

Next time, I'll start talking about where we're at and what are the projects we're balancing.

gaia is continueing to grow more and more popular which makes more money but more users means more new features and upkeep which takes out money so you should have a good balance with financial issues

Very informative, I do think that such an article as yours, SHOULD be passed around to a more larger spectrum of people, not just your journal stalkers XD

That way there is at least some education.

That is very busy situation to be in, plust you have to make this money to pay your workers, and add for the stuff you will put on gaia, means you make big bucks but not much, i was thinking that you really just pay them and still have big $ but now i get the busy picture, plus will love more information on how was your live back then when you started thinking on creating such a good site name Gaiaonline.com!

FYI - I read this when you first posted, but not sure why I didn't comment on it til now...hehehe

Lanzer...just wanted to say how much I appreciate you giving at least a little insight into Gaia and how it operates, as well as expenses (which as a private company you have NO obligation to justify for us)...

I can understand how many users (mostly those who're younger or have skewed perceptions of how companies run) question Gaia, their motives, how much money they "need" and the like...but in the end, all we need to come to terms with is that Gaia is a company...a company like many who care about their users, who care about creating new features to keep the site fresh, who care about the integrity of their site and brand, and who care about giving as much info (as possible or allowed) to their users...many Gaians don't appreciate or acknowledge that.

At any rate, your journal, always interesting stuff...and it's a pleasure to know that you and the rest of the staff are trying to keep the site as transparent as possible without giving away the farm...keep doing what you're doing because those who think Gaia is some mythical business that only needs to break even can be as skeptical as they want because that's who they are...but I'll always love the staff and Gaia...your a** will always be beautiful to me man. xd

Fascinating.

This does start to put things in perspective.

Question, how many job applications does Gaia usually get?

This signature is a testament to the greatest signature ever made!

Lanzer, I understand that this site costs a lot of money to run. But there are many users who are angry at the methods you and the team chose to bring in money and to grow. In general, people are upset that "gaia gold" doesn't mean much anymore, with the Cash Shop here.

I also realize that it's a very good thing to expand a community. However, a lot of older users are leaving angry because of the websites appeal to users who, quite frankly, have no clue what Gaia is supposed to be about. If Gaia isn't about a forum community anymore (not even mentioning the role play aspect), then I don't want to be here. Please be clear about what you really want Gaia to be. If it's something very different than what it was, then I wish you luck, and hope that business goes well. However, I will leave, and so will many other old friends you've made a long time ago.

I don't mean to be so pessimistic but I've noticed that the whole atmosphere of Gaia has changed dramatically, even in my eyes, a 2006 member.

Please consider what I've said, as I have considered what you've said.

ninja Just a thought, i think Gaia would generate more revenue if the cash shop items are more appealing, concept and design-wise. ninja
And, it's true users came here for the community, you really don't have to add fancy things to the site. sweatdrop
Buuut, if you can incorporate the virtual pet into Gaia, that would be ...a potential?

And I would work for minimum wage!
If I have to make as much as everyone else, then I would just donate all my extra money back XD

I wuff Gaia. I'd like to help it grow!
Once, of course, I get my butt into college... Where I should have been TWO YEARS AGO!!! O_O

Absolutely Fantastic!

I have always wondered what it was like to run a huge social site (from the inside)

This level of insight has made me happy to know more than I previously did.....
On top of that, i'm glad to see that there are people out there who can write serious journal entries (without 1337 sp34k, Lol's, XD's, or other miscellaneous things)

See you on Gaia everyone!!!

Hey, I guessing you were one of the panelists at New York Comic Con last summer (and probably lots of other panels XD)? Very interesting journal entry here. It's nice to hear about the hardcore history of Gaia, and I look forward to seeing more. Thank you for writing! smile

Well, I don't know but I think Sir Lanzer is telling us this not because he wants us to realize how hard and costly it is to run the site, but he wants us to realize how hard and costly it is to provide new features and aspects on the site. Or maybe both.

You see, many people are constantly accusing Gaia of leaving their very roots of becoming a forum-based website. We could see this by manifestations of boycotts and complaints from the users themselves. They say that Gaia is already becoming too corporate or business-minded than user-oriented. But the point is this website has also many people that demand improvement from them, such as new features. As he mentioned a while ago, the site costs around 1.5M to run, and we don't really know if it includes the costs of adding new features or it's the cost alone of running the site. (Or maybe it's just me) But one thing is for sure: That doesn't include the sweat, tears, toil and eyebags of the developers themselves. (I know it's not hard to imagine, but some people do forget about or ignore these facts while using the site.)

I admit that I'm only a year old on this site and apparently have no clue what this site looks like at the beginning other than how the older users describe and illustrate it, but it's certain that Gaia, no matter how the developers try, will never be actually the same again and will continue to expand and progress. I know that feeling of missing the "good ol' days", but let's face it: The only permanent in this world is change and improvement. Nations rise; People grow; Ideas change; and so as Gaia itself. Some of us might not like the improvements but hey, there's no actually pleasing everybody.

I still believe in you Lanzer! Been here for over 5 years, could not just leave after so long! I remember old Gaia very well, even if I am not happy with everything new that happens I think there is still much to stay for. You cant like everything right?...I try to donate whenever I think an item is worth spending real money on.

I hope that Gaia can still keep being in its own way and not always follow the mainstream in every way. I wasn't very happy about the celebrity thing but you finally made Battle system! AKA Zomg. For almost as long as I can remember people have been talking about it, and you finally made it! I think its a big success.

Gaia has also such a large amount of items and I think that's what I like most.

Thanks for the time so far. Senyoru-Chan

So what would you have to say about people who have "mules"? It's usually the same person but multiple accounts..

LANZER.
I'm so happy that I became a part of this site.
My cousin gave me my first account, it was one of her old mules that she never used.
And since early 2004, I've been failthful to this site..
It's weird, but it's changed my life in a lot of ways.
And, so I guess, I just want to say thank you.
Thank you and all of HQ for working so hard to give us this place where we can connect with the world.
My heart goes out to you because for 4+ years this place has been my home..
I've grown so much on Gaia just as Gaia itself has been growing.. and as much as I dislike a few additions to the site, I can never just get up and quit.. I've learned to adapt.
So..
Thank you so much for this site, which holds so many great memories.
<3
