It's been my first day at my second job here on campus. First job just FYI if working at the Cage II, a wonderful little cafe. Lots of fun. Now onto the unfortunately mandatory second shift: Burger King. I swear... for all those who have dreaded working in the fast food industry: it is far worse than you realize. I've worked all of three hours there and I'm ready to blow someone's brains to the wall. My coworkers aren't even alive. They try to keep their voices cheerful, but their eyes are dead. No one smiles, no one laughs, no one is happy. You smile at them and they give you a down-trodden nod. The only time they'll even look in the general direction of your face is if you ask a question. I'm fairly certain the manager is a Dementor; sucking all the happiness out of the people. It's actually worse during the times when there are no orders to fill since I have nothing to do but feel the slow crushing of my spirit. I can't say that orders exactly keep my mind busy... they're all practically the same. I swear I died a little bit inside with every chicken sandwich I assembled, and I had around 330 orders to fill in three hours... a lot more inner dying than I'm used to in a day. I say assembling because the work is reminiscent of putting together a twice-deep-fried, old mayonnaise smeared Lego set. All the hamburgers are basically a lightly warmed bun with old mayo, lettuce, and something that passes for meat. I've been there all of three hours and I do believe I will never be able to eat there again knowing that every burger contains a piece of the makers soul (the special ingredient that makes their stuff taste so good). Now I have to ask: am I the only one who finds it disturbing that BKs chicken tenders are shaped like chicken feet? The bright side is that they hire by the semester so in a couple weeks I can drop the death job and pick up a few more shifts at the wonderful coffee shop.
The ironic thing is that back when I first started working in high school I decided that I would never end up in a job where I had to ask people if they wanted fries with that. Since I work in the back I don't have to ask the dreaded question... so technically I haven't let down my oath. Technically... but I still hate it.
