Ardnix: Chapter 1
Ardnix: Chapter 1
Humble Beginnings

~Kayla just got home from school and she didn't seem all that happy. Her mother heard her come in and asked her how her day was. Kayla replied, "It was just terrible. Jennifer wasn't in today and we had plans. I think shes sick. Either way my day is ruined."

~Her mother sounded a little sympathetic as she washed dishes. "That is just too bad." She said. "Oh. I forgot to mention. You have a guest. He is waiting for you in your room. He's been waiting patiently all day while you were at school."

~"YOU LET A GUY IN MY ROOM!? AND HE'S BEEN IN THERE ALL DAY!?" Kayla shuddered as she grabbed a baseball bat from the hall closet. "I don't even want to think about what he's been doing all day." Kayla's mother just laughed as Kayla went up stairs to her bed room.

~From outside her room she could hear a small pounding on the wall. She wondered what her visitor was doing. Reluctantly she opened the door and readied her bat. She recognized the person. He was lying back on her bed throwing a tennis ball of the wall and catching it to entertain himself. When he saw Kayla, he got up. "Hey there," he said with a smile. "Long time no see."

~Kayla leapt at him hugging him tightly. "THOMAS! Oh my god. It's been 3 months since I've seen you. I missed you so much." She started to squeeze him harder because she wanted to be sure she wasn't dreaming.

~"You're crushing my ribs and lungs. I can't breath." Thomas said. Gasping for air he tried to push her away.

~Kayla jumped up and sat in her computer chair. Thomas sat up at the edge of her bed cross legged. "I'm sorry about that. It's just been 3 months since I last saw you. Ever since I moved I've been really lonely."

~"It's all right. I've missed you too. Getting into fights isn't fun without you around to bail me out of trouble." He said with a smile.

~She shook her head and smiled. "You are still getting into fights? Why don't those kids just stop picking on you?"

~"Actually it's the other way around. I pick on them now. Actually most of the fights have been because people still talk about you behind your back."

~Kayla was outraged. "Are you serious? I'm not even around and they still do that?"

~"They only didn't like you because you liked me and chose to hangout with me. They only hate me because I'm different."

~"They need to get lives. I like you because you're different. Plus we like a lot of the same things."

~"Wait. What's with the bat?" Thomas asked just now noticing it. Kayla kicked it under the bed and pretended like nothing was there.

~Kayla attempted to change the subject. "So what are you doing here? Are you and your mom on vacation? I bet shes out shopping right now." Thomas just looked away. Kayla sensed something was wrong. "What's wrong?"

~Thomas looked back at her. His eyes were a little wetter. "Shes dead." Thomas said. He sat silently, holding back tears.

~"Oh god. What happened?" Kayla asked. She was shocked to hear this news. She almost felt like crying her self.

~"Our house suddenly exploded. I was at school when I got the call. That day everyone actually left me alone. That was a day I could have used some attention."

~"I'm so sorry." Kayla said as she hugged him. She didn't let go. "Are you going to be o.k.? Do you need anything?"

~"I'm fine. I just want to try and forget about it for now." Thomas patted her on the back and thanked her.

~Kayla let got and sat back in her chair. "How long are you staying here?"

~"I'm gonna be living with you guys. Your mom agreed with my mom that should my mom die, I'd live with you. They both felt it would be for the best."

~"What about all your stuff? Did it all get destroyed in the explosion?" Kayla asked.

~"All my clothes and belongings did. Why?"

~"Tomorrow is Saturday so I'll take you to get new clothes."

~"You really don't have to."

~"You need them Thomas. Besides, then you can meet Jennifer."

~"Who is Jennifer?"

~"She is the only friend I've made her. Like you and I, shes a bit of an outcast."

~"Why don't the people her like her?"

~"Well she used to sit alone a lot. When she was asked why she said, 'Because you damn people get in my damn way.' They all think she thinks shes too good for them."

~Thomas smiled. "Sounds like my kind of person. I can't believe I haven't said that."

~"I'm sure you'll get along with her. Stay away from her brother though. He is very protective and doesn't like guys around her."

~"Feh. I'm not scared of anyone." Thomas said cockily with a big grin.

~"Trust me, you should not mess with him. One new kid did and he just pulled the lockers right off the walls."

~"Sounds like fun. Now I have to fight him." Thomas said excitedly.

~"You still like testing your limits huh?" Kayla asked smiling.

~"Do you really have to ask?"

~"Nope."

~They sat silently for a moment. "I have a question for you now. Got a boyfriend yet?"

~"Hell no. All the guys here are worse than the guys back home. All sex and drugs." Kayla paused for a minute. "I assume you still think that all girls are evil right?"

~Thomas looked at her sharply. "They are and you know it. You're one of them too. You hold powers over us guys. Mostly me who can't help but do anything for you when you need me to."

~Kayla laughed. "And who always helps you with your school work in return?"

~Thomas just stared for a minute. "You do."

~"Exactly." Kayla looked at the time. It was already 6 P.M. She got home about an hour ago. She flicked the mouse of her computer so it would come off of the screen saver. No sooner did she log on to AIM she got an IM. "Hey. It's Jennifer."

- Jen112890: Hey Kayla. Wuts up?

- KrazeeKay: NM. Where were u?

- Jen112890: My bro had me stay home to help him rearrange furniture.

- KrazeeKay: That is just stupid.

- Jen112890: Yea it is... NE way... R U busy?

- KrazeeKay: No. Why?

- Jen112890: Can you meet me at the park? I want to talk to you about something.

- KrazeeKay: Sure, I actually have someone I want you to meet.

- Jen112890: Ok. As long as we talk one on one first. I'll see you there.

- KrazeeKay: C U there.

~Kayla shut down her computer. "Ready to go?" She asked Thomas.

~"I can't go. I just feel like sitting around after what happened."

~Kayla nodded and left without him.

~When Kayla got to the park she found Jennifer on the swings. Jen stopped for her. Kayla got on the swing next to her. They swung in unison as they talked. "So whats up Jen?"

~"He broke up with me." Jen said looking at the ground.

~"Why?" Kayla asked truly concerned for her friend.

~"He said he found a hotter girl who puts out."

~"Hes not a good guy anyway. I told you that."

~"But it just always feels right."

~"And then every guy leaves you for a slut. You don't need to feel bad. You just need to find a good guy."

~"I don't like being hurt."

~"No one does."

~"I think I'm going to work on my painting tomorrow."

~"You should. It's been coming out really nice." They both got off of the swings. Kayla hugged her and said, "I'll find you a good guy."

~"I give up on relationships. I always get hurt." Jennifer walked away.
