story line 1
chrystil awakens, as the sun hits her window, and knows today is the day. She rushes out of bed and into her clothes, grabs her backpack, and storms down the stairs so quickly her family doesn't even notice. As she walks down her block, a cool, calm breeze hits her bare shoulders. She almost flies as she runs past the bleak, stucco houses and modular homes. cool air is a gift in Arizona.
"Chrystil, Where are you off to in such a rush?" the post man comes out of nowhere, driving his little box-like truck to the speed of Chrystil's antics.
" I'm off to see Lauwrenza today! She said she has a gift for me!" Speaks Chrystil, out of breath and barely able to say anything at all.
"Now girl, that Miss Lawrenza isn't someone you should be goin' around. she does all that voodoo stuff, living on an empty dead end, 5 million cats...." the post man shivers.
"but she's more interesting than anyone else in town! well, in her own way." Chrystil tries to correct herself, as she notices a crushed look on the post man's face.
"well, you be careful, then. and tell yer mom I says hi!" He shouts as he speeds off, to finish his rounds.
Chrystil turns a corner to find herself on a vacant dead end, Raven Ave. she walks to the last house on the small street, a large black victorian. It was three stories high, about 4 times the size of her own 3 bedroom home, with shutters falling off and shingles hanging from the roof. it had looked like no one had been there for a century; the only sign of life was the 20 something cats on the front porch.
as she climbed the steps, she made her aquaintance, petting the kitties and saying, "hello sugar, hi Pumkin! How's little miho today?" when she finally makes it to the door, she hears a lofty voice echoing from inside,"Come on in Chrystil!"
She enters the house, once strange but now so familiar to her. the inside was definitely not as bleak as the outer shell, filled to the roof with bright, beautiful colors, paintings covering everywall, interesting artifacts on every surface. it was her second home now, and whenever chrystil needed space, she came to Miss Lawrenza's.
"Tea?" A tall, slender woman came walking out of one of the 7 doors in the lower level hall. she had long, curly auburn hair, green eyes, and a smile that would dazzle the world. she wore a long brown peasent skirt and a black t-shirt. around her neck hung a lace choker with three charms: the star of david, a cross, and a pentacle.
"My, you look winded dear! come, sit in the greenhouse with me, I have some work to do with my herbs before I can retrieve your gift!" Miss Lawrenza's eyes lit up and her smile broadened as she walked torward the back of the hallway, out the last door, and into the greenhouse.
"so what are you doing today?" chrystil said, following her into a glass room attached in the back of the house, and filled with wonderful smelling plants.
" I have to trim the cat-n** and dry it. my kitties are waiting." said miss lawrenza jokingly.
"speaking of kitties, has MaMa Sunshine had her babes yet?" Chrystil had wanted to be there when it happened, but she had school, homework, and chores to take care of.
"oh, yes! there are 4 new boys and 3 new girls to our happy family! But I just can't think of any more names!" Lawrenza looks up playfully at chrystil."I know you wanted to be here, but the time came, so I left the naming..................for you."
"NO WAY! and there's seven. isn't that your lucky number?" chrystil pulled out her pen and paper and started listing names that miss lawrenza's 37 cat's didn't have.
"yes, seven is my lucky number. it's why I bought this old house. 7 doors, 7 rooms on each level, 21 total."
"not including the attic." Chrystil spoke very quietly when she said this, because the attic had always been a touchy subject for miss lawrenza. she forbade anyone to go up there.
"yes, not including the attic. which reminds me....... your gift!" Miss lawrenza puts down her catnip plant, and steadily walks into the house. chrystil jumps up and rushes behind her.
they climb up two floors, and walk into the fourth bedroom. Chrystil's jaw drops, for she sees a box in the middle of the spacious room, almost 4 feet tall and as wide as 3 feet, wrapped with a huge bow, and a small tag that read: to chrystil, the artist. She stumbles to the box," Oh Lawrenza, you didn't have to do this!"
"ummmm, I didn't. It came in the mail, poor post man had to walk it up here for me. I think the inside of our little domain scared him more than the outside!" Miss lawrenza giggled.
"but then, who sent it?" chrystil said, running her finger across the top of the box.
"we'll save that for another time. open it!" Miss Lawrenza was obviously as excited as Chrystil.
