I supposed I should tell you of Nathaniel next. First off if Nathaniel Perkins had not been in my life I probably would’ve ended up just like him. Just like me he was a magical genius until I came a long he had no equal. Before me he was the prodigy, he set all the records and the stories were told about him. But being completely unparalleled is boring and being a genius and bored is always bad. Plus on top of being a complete genius Nathaniel was also a total psychopath. I guess meeting me was his trigger.
I don’t know much about Nathaniel and what he was like before he met. I’m told that like, Richie he was very popular. Unlike Isaac and me he could connect to people. He knew how to get into people’s hearts, something I learned how to do from him. But we used that talent in different ways. I consider myself a teacher while Nathaniel was a manipulator. He used this talent to convince people to trust him. He was particularly gifted in the art of brainwashing and mental torture.
Like most geniuses Nathaniel loved games. That is after all why he was fascinated by me. Games by themselves are boring; to make them interesting one needs an opponent. However as I have Nathaniel was a genius and had no one who could challenge him until I came a long. Once he learned what I could do he jumped at the chance to play with me. My training with him revolved around games. I learned how to strategize from Nathaniel even though he no intention of teaching me anything. All he wanted was to play.
My lessons with Nathaniel were nothing short of torture. He attacked me in every conceivable way, trying over and over to break me. But I was better than him despite not even being half his age and he did not like that. He tried to manipulate me constantly. He appealed to my strong sense of logic and sometimes, more often than I would ever like to admit, I fell for his tricks. Nathaniel wanted to control me, I was never entirely sure as to why. He was a twisted soul. From what I can tell at first he was fine, just like me. But there is only so long a person can look at the world through eyes like ours and not snap.
But Nathaniel had a lot of going against him in order to get to me. The first was my familiar, Cair, who was able to sense in him what he was able to hide from other people. So he killed Cair. Isaac was his next obstacle. Nathaniel was able to charm Richie into trusting him but never Isaac. Richie had a very open heart but while that’s nice with normal company but with Nathaniel is was a lethal weakness to be exploited as he desired. But Isaac had a very closed heart and so Nathaniel was never able to get to him like he was able to with Richie.
In fact the only reason that they were all friends was because Richie’s open heart. He reached out to them. He saved Isaac from loneliness and despair and he thought that he had saved Nathaniel too. He was mistaken. Although he did have a little control over Nathaniel, he was the only one who did. Just like Sarah had with me. But as I was saying with Isaac and Nathaniel, Isaac could see Nathaniel objectively and saw what he was doing to me. He stood up to protect me from him and Nathaniel killed him for it.
But killing Isaac was a mistake. He got caught. I figured it out but Richie wouldn’t believe me until Nathaniel attacked me too. Needless to say by then he was completely gone and the Perkins-Trent War was underway. But before I go into the war that shaped my youth I want to tell you about Richie first.
