And With the Heart of Family ch. 3
CHAPTER 3

*Disclaimer: I don’t own anyone but Phoenix.*

Vincent was acting different. That was easy for even a blind girl to see. There was something going through the man’s head that kept his answers to her questions or comments short, and for some reason it bothered Phoenix. She couldn’t tell what had bothered him. It was right after lunch three days prior. He had been acting normally enough, asking her questions and then suddenly, he left and she was left to wonder.

And wonder she did. Not just about his sudden change of attitude, but also about herself. What was wrong with her that she was worried about upsetting this man? He had killed her cousin, her friend. She didn’t want to be his friend.. Did she? Yet, when he was so put off around her, it wounded her somehow. She wanted him to talk to her, to ask her questions. And why in the world was she so concentrated on Vincent? She didn’t feel things for men, she didn’t feel things for anyone, but spite.

Phoenix stumbled into the living area and swore softly to herself. She could hear people in the kitchen and assumed that the living room was free. For some reason she wanted to be alone. Though she told herself that it wasn’t to think about Vincent and how he was acting.

Sitting down on the center cushion of the couch she gasped, there was someone already there. She immediately jumped up, falling to the side onto another cushion. “I’m sorry.” She said, hand over her fluttering heart. She felt his hands on her waist.

“It’s fine.” came Vincent’s clipped voice.

Tifa watched from the kitchen as Vincent placed Phoenix next to him. She heard his stiff reply and sighed. There had been something going strong not long before, and now it seemed the man found it hard to even have her near, though Tifa had caught him looking at her on multiple occasions. If only…

“Oh, no!” Came Cloud’s voice from next to her. He put the carton of milk down on the counter and shook his head, turning Tifa to face him. “I know that look, Tif.. Don’t do what I think you are thinking about doing.” Tifa tried to give him an innocent look, but Cloud had known her for too long. “Don’t. No matchmaking.”

“But Cloud, they could both be so happy.” Tifa said, deciding the innocent act was not going to work with him. “Vincent needs to get over what happened thirty years ago, and Phoenix needs someone. She’s been alone since her cousin died. That’s too long, especially for someone who has special needs.” Cloud sighed.

“They don’t need that, Tif.” He said, grabbing a glass for his milk. “And I don’t think Phoenix needs your pity. She’s a very independent girl, even for someone who could see.”
