Chapter 21- Captured

********! Why am I always the one to mess things up? The same thing happened so many years ago, when we first were tracked by the Dark Lord. I slid myself to the back of the cell, hugging my knees to my chest, as a cold breeze blew through my hair. I felt like I deserved to be there, for what I had done. It was bad enough that I screwed over my family again, but I was blind. Yay for me. Not.

"Candace" I heard Lin call me from my left side. I didn't reply. How could I?

"It's okay Candace, there's nothing to see here" I guess he was trying to comfort me

"I know. I don't care." My voice sounded shockingly steady

I heard him scoot towards the bars that divided myself and him. I leaned my head on the stone wall, my face now facing the ceiling.

"I'm sorry" I whispered quietly.

"For what?"

"For getting you, me, us caught."

"It's not your fault. I'm sure they would have captured us one way or another." He tried to reassure me, with little avail.

At least there was one thing I knew I could do right. I felt for my bag, which I thankfully grabbed earlier and pulled out my box of matches, then reached back in to find the candles that I never quite got rid of.

"Are you okay?" Lin asked

"Yeah." I felt for the rough side of the match box and lit the match on fire.

I heard Lin jump from the noise but I kept a straight face and put the match to the wick of the candle, immediately giving light to the cell. I blew out the match and threw it on the ground. I carefully crawled towards Lin, extending my hand out to him, giving him the candle. He looked at me for a few seconds and brought his hand to my face. He shook his head with disapproval.

"I think you need the candle more than I do" He handed the candle back to me, then took my hand, lacing his fingers with my own. I closed my eyes.

"Why?" I asked, my eyes still closed.

"Why what?" He looked at me oddly with one eye brow raised.

"Why did you.. fall in love with me?" I felt scared to ask the question. What if he doesn't love me, since I tripped and got us captured?

"What do you mean?" He looked down at me with an upset face and I glanced up at him.

"Why didn't you fall in love with someone else? Anyone else?" I put my head on my knees.

"Because I love you... And only you." He replied. I felt my heart thump loudly.

"But because of me, your in your own castle's damn dungeon" I took a breath, feeling stupid.

"Because of you, I'm happy" He countered. I felt a tingle run though my body and I looked at his face.

"I'm really happy that I met you in the meadow, and that my dad made me go looking for you guys" he grinned at me.

"I'm glad I met you too." I squeezed his hand, as he squeezed mine back.

"I guess it's my turn to apologize." I looked up at him with a confused look.

"What? Why?" I questioned. He didn't do anything wrong..

"If you hadn't met me, you would still be in your hut, safe." I paused and looked at the ground. I never thought of it that way.

"If you fell in love with any other man, not the Dark Lord's son, I think you would be in better hands" I felt my throat tighten.

"But, if I was at my hut, how would I meet anyone? And I love being with you.. I don't want to be with anyone else." I murmured quietly to him.

A few minutes passed as we stayed like this, the room still brightly lit from the single candle.

"Oh. Ow." I spoke under my breath, as the melted wax ran onto my hand.

Lin looked at my hand and took the candle from it.

"Are you okay?" He looked at me and I nodded.

"Thank you." I replied, peeling the now dried wax off my hand. I rubbed my hand a couple times and leaned my head against the bars.

"So first, you let me hold it, then you won't let me hold it?" I laughed

"Circumstances do change" he replied back, patting the back of my hand.

"I kinda miss you" I turned my head to look at him.

"I'm right next to you" he gave a small chuckle.

I stared at him with a frown-like pout through the rusty old bars as he just snickered at the face I was making.

"Hey! Don't laugh at me!" I rebutted playfully.

"Why don't you turn into a small animal to come over here and stop me then?" he teased. Or was he being serious?

"Oh.. Good idea." I took a breath and tried to turn into a mouse. I paused after a second. Why wasn't I a mouse? I tried again with no avail. What the hell?

"Hey Maya.. Can you use any of your powers?" I asked, not sure if that even worked

"No."I took a breath of relief. At least we could still talk to each other.

"I can't change." I looked at Lin

"What do you mean?" He asked

"I don't know. I just can't." I sighed. So much for that plan.

"Where are you?" I asked Maya. Hopefully she wasn't too far away.

"I have no idea. You?"

"No idea"I agreed

"By the way... What were you doing with Lin in the room?" Maya sounded cautious, but I ignored her question, a grin appearing on my face.

"Are you okay Candace?" I looked at Lin

"Yeah, why?" I asked innocently.

"You suddenly went quiet"

"Oh.. sorry, I got lost in 'thoughts'." It was somewhat the truth. He nodded once in understanding.

"If you don't mind me asking, what happend to your mom?" He looked down at the ground and back to me.

"Well, you know she died" I nodded to him and he looked at the ground

"She killed herself" He spoke in a low, almost inaudible voice. He looked like he was about to cry.

"I'm so sorry" Lin shook his head.

"My mom was very weak when she was growing up, so it stuck to her when she became an adult, and married my dad. She wasn't allowed to go outside or do much, so she lived her life on the same seat where your mom now sits." He look a breath, looking at me, then at the ground again.

"But she wanted to live in the same world as everyone else. She didn't want to be locked up in a huge castle she wasn't allowed to look around" He took a short pause.

"Why wasn't she allowed to leave?" I asked, Lin looking at me and giving me a strange smile.

"My dad wouldn't let her" He replied back, no tone in his voice.

"My mom.. was.. unhappy with her life style. She loved my dad a lot, but she couldn't live the way she was living. Then one day she just cracked and she jumped out of her window." I stared at him wide eyed.

"How is that not worse than my family?" I asked, my eyes still wide. He just shrugged.

"I've had many years to get over it"

"Candace?" I heard Maya call me.

"Yes? I asked back quickly

"How old were you, then?" I took his hand and held it in my lap.

"I think about five or six"

"What were you doing with Lin?" She pursued again.

"So then you've almost lived your whole life without your mother?" He shrugged his shoulders again and smiled at me. I frowned, how could he smile at that?

"We were kissing.. That's all." I didn't explain how we were locked in each-others bodies, or how we were pouring our love for each-other to one another.

"I guess it wasn't that bad, I mean, I'm fine now. Let's just say my dad is hell bound" he smiled at me and I gave him a half smile back

"Oh.. The way you put it, it sounded a lot worse.. like you guys were having sex or something.." I froze for a second but hastily stood up.

"WHAT!? How could you even think that!?" I felt my face burn at the thought. Why the hell was she thinking that? She was the one on planning to have the babies when we get out of this!

"What?" Lin looked up at me completely shocked. I looked down at him, just as shocked.

"I agree?" I tried to cover myself up, but Lin looked at me in disbelieve.

"Right." He patted the spot where I was sitting before and I took a breath, sitting down again.

"Maya! I accidentally just yelled out loud my reply to your STUPID thinking!" I freaked.

".. Good Job Candace. Well, try to cover it up and if you can't, then just tell him"

"I was yelling at myself" I tried to keep a straight face, but he kept looking at me in disbelieve.

"Candace, I'm serious. I know you wouldn't protest against my dad going to hell." I took another breath and closed my eyes.

"I was yelling at Maya" I opened them again, to see Lin giving me a strange look

"But she isn't around here, I believe she's on the other side of the castle" I kept a mental note of that statement.

"Yes"

"So.."

".. We're telepathic." I hope Maya won't be too angry. I looked at Lin's face, I couldn't tell whether he looked shocked, angry, or neutral about it.

"You couldn't tell me this before?" I guess his emotion was mixed between shock and anger.

"Well.. When I first told you about my power to shift, I didn't want you to find out too much about my family, which would be referring to Maya." I took a breath. "Although, you seem to know more about my family than I do." I turned my head away from him, somewhat ashamed.

"And since then, it just didn't seem important." I closed my eyes so I wouldn't have to look at Lin's face. I felt a pat on my left shoulder and jolted my head in his direction.

"You could of told me something like that, but I think it's best if we don't let my dad know" He patted my head

"He might already know, but I'm not sure" I replied giving him a grunt for messing up my hair.

"How?" he asked, as I started to fix my hair

"We've been telepathic most of our life's, so mom would know and she might of told your dad. Although the wizard doesn't know." I brushed my side bangs with my fingers.

"Oh, I see." he simply replied.

"Does he know about my other power?" I asked, Lin nodded his head and I sighed.

"Then no wonder I can't shift" I felt like hitting my head on the bars. It was so obvious.

"Why?" I looked at Lin for a second.

"Because your 'awesome' dad made my da-- the wizard put up a barrier." I heavily empathized the awesome, rolling my eyes.

"Oh." Maybe he realized it was quite obvious, too.

"Maya, I know why we can't use our powers and I told him about our telepathy."

"Our dad and it's fine. I told Jason." I nodded.

"Yeah."

"Damn" I heard Lin mumble next to me and I looked at the candle.

"Are you okay? Let me hold it." I attempted to grab it out of Lin's hand so he wouldn't have to deal with the hot wax. He just shook his head

"I don't want you to get hurt" He switched the candle to his other hand and stuck it out so I couldn't reach it. I made a pouty face to him.

"But I don't want you getting hurt" I replied back to him, worried. It really did hurt to have wax run down your skin.

"Don't worry, it isn't that bad." I nodded a few times still looking at him.

"Candace, are you okay?" I heard Maya come out of no where

"Yes, why?" I reached out again for the candle

"Because I know you hate being blind and since I'm in darkness, you must be too." Maya sounded slightly worried.

"Yeah, but I still have my matches and a few candles from mom's ceremony." I looked at Lin, who looked confused.

I shook my head, meaning for him to drop the subjetct.

".. Damn you" I let out a laugh. Lin raised one eyebrow.

"Nothing!" I replied in a bubbly tone.

"I'm going to see how big this cell is" I dug around in my bag for another candle and my match box. I lit the candle and started walking around, counting my steps, walking along the edge of the cell.

".. How is it that your dungeon cell is larger than my hut?" I called from across the cell.

I think I saw him shrug, but it was hard to tell. I started heading back to my spot next to Lin, tripping over my foot, the candle falling and rolling few feet in front of me

"Candace?" I heard Lin call to me.

"I'm fine I'm fine. I just tripped" I stood up, picking up my candle off the floor

"Stop falling so much. Your such a klutz" He joked. I laughed at his comment and sat back next to him, holding his hand.

"Hey Maya, we need to figure a way out of this place"

"Don't worry, I think I may have an idea"
