Gaia is really selling out. The Sims 3 event, the Skittles daily chance, the profile/trailer/quest things for various video games. Gaia is really selling out. It is a decent way for them to make money. They probably sell thousands of monthly collectibles every month which is several thousands of dollars there. Then there is evolving items. That's probably a few thousand more. Then the cash cards. Their ads on other sites as well as cost for server p keep shouldn't cost that much so I doubt it's to keep the gaia experience "free". Anyway it's still a way for kids to kill time and a way for companies to advertise.
