Chapter 1: Terminal
The airport was loud and crowded. People stepped on my feet and pushed me over with out even saying sorry. In a way it was a lot like the city. I held my mothers hand and my father walked beside her. My legs were wobbly from being seated for so long, and it felt strange to be back on the ground. The baggage claim was full so we had to weave our way around people as far as we could. I guessed our suit cases went around at least 14 times before we got there. I waited till I saw our things and let out a cry when I saw mine. I saw my plush cats blue ears sticking up out over my moms bag. My mom basically had to hold me back from jumping onto the conveyer belt. As soon as our bags were with us, I untied the orange scarf holding my stuffed animal to the bag handle. I squeezed it until it felt like its eyes were going to pop out.
?Mommy, look,? I said holding the cat up, ?Tabbers is ok.?
?Well aren?t we lucky,? said my mom. I didn?t like the thought of moving, but mom and dad said that the city was not a good place to raise a child. I was only 5 so I didn?t know why it wasn?t a good place, but now, 10 years later, I know perfectly well.
I still look back at that day. The day when I first moved here. I remember all too well how frightened I was. But now I rarely feel that any more. I know the people here and I?ve grown to love it. I have many, many, friends and I?m one of the top students in my class. I spend most of my time painting pictures or studying medical science. My dream is to be a nurse; a good one. My parents have found great work here and life couldn?t be better. My two best friends, Dan and Linnie are great to me and support my dreams. I guess you could say my life was like a perfect photograph.
I?m a candy striper at the local hospital. I bring the patients food, and water, and keep them company, I basically did nice things. I was happy with what I did. I had a regular paying job, but I just liked being at the hospital. I wore a white outfit with pink stripes on it. It was a tight dress and I got to wear a little hat. Very old world, I know, but this was kind of a different hospital. The workers were very professional, however, there were always very few patients there.
There was one patient at the hospital that was very fond of me. Her name was Mrs. Morrkin. She always had something to tell me about her childhood. I always listened to her and talked to her when ever I could. I?m not sure what she was in the hospital for, but she seemed to be strong enough to speak and move around. She never talked about her condition, but I always kept the thought that she was going to get better really soon. Unfortunately, she passed away a year ago. I was surprised when her will was read, she left me a necklace with a stunning opal on it. I wear it all the time and still think of her when every time I pass by the room she died in.
?Hey, Clair,? yelled my friend Linnie. ?Wait up.?
Linnie was a candy striper too. She did it because she loved people. She can always make someone smile, and she likes having something to do in her spare time. Dan?s father was a doctor at the hospital. I was told he was one of the better ones there.
?Hi Donna,? I said as I walked into the hospital. ?How are you today??
?Hi Clair, Linnie,? she said nodding, and ?Go right on ahead.?
?Thanks,? I said signing my name in the sign in book.
?Oh, you two, I think that Dan is here with his father today, so you can go in and see him.?
?Thanks Donna,? said Linnie.
Donna was a young nurse who worked there, in her mid twenties, I think. She wore the same outfits we do when we volunteer. We changed into our outfits and walked out into the hall. In stead of walking into the hospital rooms, we walked down the hall to Dans fathers office. Dan was there reading a book. He was slouched in a chair and looked bored out of his mind.
?Hey Dan,? Linnie said walking up to him to see what he was reading.
?Oh, hi Linnie, hi Clair,? he said slowly setting down his book, ?I was reading one of my dads medical books.?
I didn?t say hi to Dan, I was too interested in Dan father?s office. I had expected pictures of family, maybe a card or two, something! There was only wall. Four plain, white, and empty walls. A lot of rooms were like that. It was kind of creepy. Anyway, I timidly walked around the room. Examining drawers and note books. I know it was none of my business, but I, for some reason, felt like looking.
Strange, I thought looking in a note book, why have so few people ever check out of this place? I was suddenly awoken from my daze by Linnies voice.
?Clair,? she asked, ?ready to start our volunteer work? Dan?s going to tag along. That ok??
?What? Oh...y-yeah, that?s ok. Lets go.? I said smiling weakly.
We walked down the halls of the hospital. Many patients were sleeping or just didn?t want to be visited. We looked for a long time until we found and sick little boy. We walked into his room. He was a pale boy with messy hair. He wore white and blue striped pajamas. His voice was very faint and weak when he spoke.
?Are you guys my angels, come to take me to heaven?? he asked turning his head and widening his gray eyes.
?No,? I said sitting down by him on his bed, ?I don?t think you?re that sick. It sounds like you just got your tonsils removed or something.? I smiled and smoothed my dress.
?Oh, that?s good,? he said sitting up and smiling shyly.
?Yeah, we?re here to keep you company,? Linnie sang happily pulling up a chair by the little boy, ?So, what?s your name??
?I?m Tomas Koppel,? he said rubbing his eyes, ?I?m only 7 years old.?
?I?m Clair, this is Linnie, and that?s Dan.? I said pointing to all my friends.
?Nice meet you all,?
?So, Tomas, are you hungry? Do want to play a game or something??
?I?m kinda hungry, but I?m afraid I won?t be able to eat anything cause my throat hurts so much,?
?We?ll see. Dan can you go get Tomas something to eat?? rofl roflcopters.. that's all i have!
