The Children Knights
Grown-ups sometimes do weird things that Sora doesn't get, like drinking things kids aren't supposed to drink, or they'll say something that just goes over his head. Or, like now, they'll start yelling for no reason at his most favorite babysitters in the whole wide world. The end result? A confused Sora.
Frowning, he stands just a few yards away, bright green park grass tickling his feet and a wooden sword held loosely in his hand. For a moment, he looks from Tai and Fiona to the strange man who had just randomly stormed up to them. From what Sora can remember, among the blur of sword fighting with Riku and one of his triplets, Pliku, the two women hadn't been doing anything. They'd just been sitting on a park bench nearby while Sora played with all his friends. In fact, they'd kinda reminded Sora of his mommy and daddy. Sometimes, the two of them would just sit next to each other, and they'd smile. A lot of the times, they'd hold hands, and his daddy would just kiss his mommy's cheek and say something to her that Sora can never really hear. Of course, he thinks it's gross (aren't grown ups ever worried about cooties? ), but he can't help but watch anyway. There's something really special about those quiet moments, even if he doesn't know what.
Fiona and Tai do the same thing, too, with that exact same feeling and the kiss and everything. For a while, he had wondered if two girls could do that, but his parents don't have a problem with it and anyways, Fiona's cool enough that she can do guy stuff anyways.
But then this random guy had showed up, right when Fiona had kissed Tai, and he'd started yelling for no reason. Sora hadn't understood why, so he had stopped sword fighting with Riku and Pliku and gone to investigate. Even as he listens now, however, he doesn't get it. All the guy is babbling about is hell and how Tai and Fiona are sinners- except that can't be right. Fiona's a cop, and cops are the good guys, and she's super awesome anyways. Then there's Tai, but that can't be right either. Tai's always nice to Sora, and everyone else, and she teaches dance to kids who don't have any parents. The guy has to be thinking about some other Fiona and Tai, maybe mean people who rob banks or something, because these two are the best. And if he's not... Sora's face scrunches up in a frown, and his hand clenches around the handle of his wooden sword. If he's not thinking of some other Fiona and Tai, then he's just being a mean doodoo head.
"What's wrong, Sora?" Kairi suddenly pipes up, clinging to his other arm and looking worried. Behind her, Riku and Pliku are frowning as well, although Riku is the one who's spotted the crazy mean guy.
"What's his problem?" he asks, pointing at the guy, Tai, and Fiona. Fiona is starting to look angry, but it's not like she's yelling back or anything. She's just standing a little in front of Tai, her eyes narrowed and a frown on her face. It's like she's just filling the air with a scary kind of anger, and Sora thinks the mean guy better back off before something bad happens. Fiona, like his daddy, has really big fists.
"Dunno," Sora admits, pouting. "He just started yelling."
"But they didn't do anything wrong," a soft voice says from the side, and the four kids turn, spotting two familiar faces: Naminé, Zexion and Luxord's daughter, holding hands with Fuu, the last of the Heart triplets. Frowning and peering out shyly from beneath her blonde bangs, Naminé says, "They were just kissing. What's wrong with that?"
Fuu just wrinkles her nose in disgust. "Homophobic," she says in a mean voice. Sora's sure he's not the only one who doesn't understand that, but that's nothing new. For a little girl, Fuu sure does use a lot of big words.
'Yo, Fuu! 'Sup?" Rai calls, and in quick time, Seifer, Rai, and Vivi, Fuu's best friends, have joined the group. This means that Roxas, Kairi's little brother, runs over, dragging a big Struggle bat along the ground as Olette, Hayner, and Pence all follow. There's a bit of confusion as the group of kids try to get the story together, but eventually it gets done.
"That just ain't right," Seifer says with a glare, putting his hands on his hips. Even though Sora thinks the blond is kind of weird, saying he'll be a super awesome good cop one day but always picks fights with Hayner, he does have a really good right and wrong sense, or whatever you call it.
"Do you think we should tell a grown up?" Pence asks, rubbing the back of his neck in confusion, and Vivi nods in agreement. Out of the two opposing groups, they always get along.
"Awww, shucks!" Hayner scoffs. "Fiona's a cop! I betcha she could take him!"
"But wouldn't she get in trouble or something?" Olette asks, frowning, and Roxas just bops Hayner on the head for his answer.
Sora, in the meantime, just stands there, frowning. He's suddenly remembering what had happened this morning, what his daddy had told him to do. Good guys protected the ones they cared about... And Sora really, really cared about Fiona and Tai. Just like that, he comes to a decision, and without a word to the others, he storms up to the guy. The grown up doesn't seem to notice him as he walks up behind him, which is good for Sora as he lifts up his wooden sword... And whacks it hard right on the back of the guy's leg. There's a help, and when the meanface grown up turns around, Sora points his sword at guy's face, glaring. "Stop bein' mean to Fiona 'n' Tai!" he orders.
There's a soft patter of flip flops against the grass, and suddenly, Kairi is at his side with a wooden sword that looks kinda like Pliku's. Even 'tho Riku is always tellin' her that girls shouldn't fight because they're girls and he'll protect her and Sora anyway (which Sora thinks is silly, because he figures Riku's the stupidhead who needs protecting), that never stops the redhead from trying anyway. Gripping the sword handle with both hands, she points it at the mean person. "Don't be a jerkhead!" she says, even as Riku skids to a halt on Sora's other side and agrees with a fervent "Yeah!" In no time at all, the other kids are clustered around Sora, some still holding onto their struggle bats or, in Fuu's case, a frisbee.
The guy steps back, either surprised or frightened, before his face darkens and he points at them. "You little ruffians have no idea what sinners you are protecting-"
THWAP. That's the sound of Fuu's frisbee hitting the man right in the middle of his forehead, and the girl just glares at him. "Bigotted," she snaps. "Box brain. Homophobe. Lamer. Retreat!"
"Why you-"
"If you don't leave," Naminé interrupts, "then we'll all start crying. That'll bring the cops, and when they ask what's wrong, we'll blame you." There's a pause as almost everyone stares at her, and the little blonde just flushes, shrinking inplace. "...That's my mommy says to do. She says, um, little kids and girls get special treatment." There's a lot more to that, Sora figures, since Naminé's mommy can sure talk a lot about confusing stuff, but he just leaves it at that.
"Jeez, Zexion is already influencing her kid," Sora hears Tai murmur to Fiona. "That woman is scary sometimes."
The man looks like he still won't leave, but Fiona finally says, "If you insist on enforcing your bigotted views onto us, then I'll report you for harassment, and I'm certain that without my knowledge, these children can inform their parents of your foolish antics. That would just be more trouble. Now, back off."
At last, the man slinks off, looking sulky and stupid and angry, in Sora's opinion. Grinning widely, he high-fives Riku and Kairi. To the side, Fuu and Rai just bury Naminé in a hug, and in all the commotion, Sora is sure he can hear Roxas ask Fiona and Tai, "This means we get ice cream, for protecting you, right?"
