Dreamer of a Dreaming Song
"Sim-pley twi-stead mem-oh-rees..."
He weaves and weaves and weaves, undoing the ship, forging a pretty blank canvas just for him, just for them as he sways.
Sway sway sway, back and forth, right and left as he gestures, conducting his orchestra of images.
He paints with his fingers, coloring in noise using paint from dreams and stories and fables. He tries to paint the screams of those pretty and ugly and oh-so fascinating women with the fishtails.
He paints and thinks and writes for their missing one, their loved one, their precious missing sharpshooter with the free laugh. Memories flow like spilled ink, and oh yes, dear Captain, he remembers...
"Ann-jeh-len..."
The planks beneath his feet are made warm again because he wants them to be, and he wants them to be the most prettiest of golden browns, like the hair of a woman doctor he once saw, like skin left out as an offering to the sun just long enough.
With each twitch of a tip and curl of a finger, he changes things, recalls things, makes his secret little room his but theirs too, because they all remember...
They will always remember.
"Dreaming, dreaming dreamer of a song..."
Remember a ship with warm brown wood and sails like angels and a wheel too big for little hands...
Were they his? Maybe, maybe...
Little hands going over maps and old books and he paints those with his voice too because it was those that they used for...
And then there was him, and oh yes, he remembers, he always remembers, he can't forget and there....
There was laughter and rough hands over his, teaching him things, teaching him how to work on a ship and how to get up to the crow's nest and how to laugh and smile and tell tall tales...
He let's his fingers flutter and flicker and flare over an eye he can remember, two of a pair, and he almost, maybe, almost, wishes for hands holding him up and laughter...
Then there is something (one? ) else and he blinks, and they're gone, his pretty dreams and tales, all gone.
He'd scream at the unfairness of it all, but he doesn't, just let's his fingers paint nothingness in the air as his one and only brother and knight and friend and base kneels besides him.
"I can't wait," he sings, staring into the distance and dreams and the past. "It's been much, all too much, hasn't it, Lexaeus? So many hours and minutes and so forth and so forth and so much."
He pauses, fingers frozen in midair. Another blink, slower this time, and his mouth stretches into a long smile. With careful spider steps, he gains closer to Lexaeus, shoulder pressing against his chest as he whispers into the giant's ear, "I.. could show him things." His eyes flash a pale blue. "Secret things," he hisses. "He likes secrets, doesn't he? And we..." Gently laying his hands on Lexaeus' shoulder, he presses their forehead together, electrified blue staring into somber navy. "We know so many secrets," he sings, the maniacal smile simmering down until it looks almost childish. Unconsiously, he begins to sink down to his knees, the smile melting from his face as he rubs at his eyes. "I think I'm tired," he murmurs, even as Lexaeus arms wrap reassuringly around him. He doesn't resist as Lexaeus stands up with him in his arms, and just closes his eyes.
Silence.
Nothing except silence.
Slowly, Zexion's eyes open again as he stares up at Lexaeus in a daze before smiling in a small, child-like way.
"I know you will."
