Chapter 40: Fairyland

The day we realized that we were traveling in circles, we became highly upset. And that is a heavy understatement! Especially for Star. “Calm down, baby” was now my most common phrase. The map was correct, but we seemed to be getting nowhere quickly, or anywhere at all for that matter! The problem was not the map. The problem was of a much more inhuman force. An inhuman, ancient, and highly intelligent force!

I speak of the Fairies. The origin of the Fairies is unknown, yet their existence is clear and undoubted. They in habit this forest and nowhere else on Moracius. No one knows that. Only of their presence. As we paced back and forth trying to come up with a plan, help was on the way whether we knew it or not!

Olivia the fairy was flying through the forest surveying all that was her home. Everything looked to be in order. That is until she caught sight of three humans and two horses. “Humans again? Haven’t seen any of them in about a year!” she recalled. Olivia noticed that the magical field the fairies had put up since then was working, and doing a damn good job at it! The thought of the frustrated humans made her giggle.

Star whipped around suddenly. “Hey, you hear that?” she asked in a hushed voice.

Neither Ashley nor me heard anything. “What did it sound like?” I whispered.

There was the ever so faint echo of a giggle once more. “You hear that??” Star asked again with deep agitation. If you stayed quiet, you could eventually hear that this giggling had turned into all out laughter! A woman or a young girl. The horses became restless and Star and I yanked on the reigns to keep them from running off. “See? Even they realize something’s wrong!”

“I’d suppose they would! Most animals have better senses that us, so technically, they’ve known something was up before us,” I told her.

“Oh whatever, Dyron!” Ashley hissed. The wind kicked up in a whirlwind and leaves and other debris blew in circles. The trees swayed and rustled as if they were ready to uproot themselves or something. The mighty gust became much more intense and I jammed my sword into the ground to anchor myself. Star then latched onto my right side and Ashley, my left.

Over the fierce winds, a voice boomed, “Leave this forest, humans!” It sounded like a woman’s voice, yet warped.

The winds finally died down and all was silent. We were being watched. By many, many eyes. I finally stood, pulled my sword out of the ground, wiped the dirt off, and put it away in the scabbard. Then I gathered the nerve to speak to whoever was out there. “We can't exactly do that!” I shouted.

The voice said, “Oh, you’re lost are you? Then I guess you’ll have to be escorted out then!” The very same voice sounded as if it were directly in front of us, when really nothing was! Or at least that’s what we thought! Another gust of wind started up and leaves danced in front of me. When it stopped after a few seconds, a small-no tiny-woman appeared before us! Right before our very eyes was this miniscule, winged female who could be no bigger than my hand! The girls were completely stunned by Olivia’s appearance. They thought it was absolutely amazing that they were actually meeting a fairy! A real live fairy!

The little winged creature flew around each one of us, inspecting and searching for anything that might disprove the label she had already given us. When she was finished, she said, “You three are indeed Demox! The best thing for you to do would be to come with me. I can lead you out of this place, quickly at that!” Olivia offered.

“Yes! That’d be the best!” Star hastily agreed. “Oh my God, you are so cute!!” she giggled. Olivia smiled and giggled at the compliment.

“What’s your name?” Ashley asked.

“Olivia,” she answered beginning to fly away. “You guys?” she asked.

“Dyron.”

Star!”

“Ashley!”

The three of us followed close behind Olivia as she ducked and weaved in and out of the branches and bushes. After a while, I couldn’t help but ask, “Where exactly are you taking us? Besides out of course!” The only other reason I asked was the fact that we were headed in a totally different direction.

Olivia turned and answered, “To see the queen!”

We stopped and repeated, “The queen?!”

“Yeah, the queen! Y’know, the Fairy Queen?”

“No! We didn’t!” Ashley replied. In the tales people tell about Fairies, there is never a word mentioned about a queen. Fairies were said to be free spirited beings that had no need for things like rules. They did as they pleased.

We traveled for what seemed like a few hours. Night had now fallen. “Olivia, when are going to get there?” Ashley yawned loudly.

Olivia looked over her shoulder and smiled. The thing is, we had just arrived! Lights began to flicker on before the fairy. Where were they coming from? Star set her hand ablaze to reveal more fairies! They held naked flames in their tiny hands and seemed hesitant to approach us. They all looked to Olivia for an answer.

“Let them be!” she commanded. “These are lost Demox who are to be escorted out of the forest!” The rest of the fairies disappeared immediately, leaving only their flames behind. “Leave everything except what’s on you. Your possessions will be safe here,” Olivia instructed. We did as we were told and followed the fairy further into the dense forest.
