"Oh, look at the strapping little man! My, you're so tall for a nine-year old. The spitting image of your father."
Aeleus just deals with tehse pampering comments with teh most patience a little kid can muster. Like all the other kids stuffed inside the house for a holiday party, he wants to go outside. That's where the snow is. He still owes Reno for that snowball he lobbed at Penele, Aeleus' younger cousin. Aeleus doesn't really care about revenge and stuff, but nobody picks on his family. For now, however, he can't do anything because of this party. He didn't want to come, but it's a friend of his parents. That means he has to stay or be grounded for a year. Maybe longer.
Eventually, the grown-ups get tired of their gushing, and Aeleus escapes in relief. Looking around, he realizes he can't find his best friend. That's okay, 'tho. Zack's not a bady guy, even though the two of them met when Zack was in the only one near an upset Penele. He's probably making friends, Aeleus figures, because that's what Zack does best. Dismissing the thoughts easily, Aeleus squeezes through teh crowded room as he makes his way to the food table. A honey cake has caught his eye, and his stomach is rumbling a little... Right as he takes a hold of the little plate, another and smaller hand that had also been reachign for it at the same time jerks back. Blinking, he looks at the girl next to him.
she can't be any older than him, even if she is shorter. Long blonde hair falls down her back, perfectly straight even at her bangs. sLarge blue eyes stare out at him shyly, and she almost shrinks into her overly large white winter coat. Red triangles decorate the bottom and edges of her long sleeves, matching her shiny red shoes. Aleeus can't put a name to her face, but he thinks she might be related to his parents' friends.
She's staring down at the honey cake in his hand, obviously hungry as well. Aeleus glances down at the snack then up at her once before he holds out the plate. "Do you want this?" he asks, and furrows his brow when she shakes her head, hair swinging wildly. "Then how come you reached for it?" No answer. Aeleus frowns some more and holds it closer to her. "You can have it, I won't mind."
"I don't want it from you!" she bursts out. "Boys have cooties!" As if just realizing her own words, her face heats up and her eyes go wide.
Aeleus can't hold back being insulted. "I do not!"
"Do too!" Still as red as a tomato, the girl whirls around and dashes off. Aeleus stands there a little longer, sulking until someone suddenlys lings an arm around his shoulder. "Are you going to eat that?" Zack asks, pointing at the honey cake. His cheerful mood is dampened a little when he sees the look on Aeleus' face. "What's up?"
Looking at his best friends, Aeleus asks, "How do you know if you have cooties?"
Zack blinks and tilts his head to the side, confused. "Dunno." An idea hits him. "We could do a check up! Like at a doctor's!" The idea appeals to both of them, and immediately they begin to gather what they can. Somehow they scrounge up a spy glass and a littl telescope, although not much else. Still, it's good enough. So begins the great cootie Check-Up. A few odd incidents happen, including almost choking on a telescope, but eventually, they figure it out, thanks to help from one of the teenagers visiting, cid. both of them are cootie free. Or, as Cid put it: "Neighter of ya stupid kids have any damn cooties."
"See? Nothing to worry about," Zack says as they sit on a little window seat, sharing the almsot forgotten honey cake. "That girl prolly hit her head or something."
"I guess," Aeleus ays, figeting as he tries not to wipe his sticky fingers on his pants. "Anyway, how come your ahir is all spiky like that, Zack?"
Teh black haired boy positively glows with excitement. "It's just like Angeleus'! He's this awesome soldier-" It tkaes forever for Zack to tell his best friend all about his newest hero, but Aeleus doesn't mind. In fact, he even finds himself holding his breath a few times, excited because Zack is so excited. At the end of it all, he manages a clumsy whistle.
"Wow. He sounds really cool."
"He is!" Zack's smile stretches across his face and he clenches his fists in admiration. "I'm gonna join the King's guard and meet him, you know. You should join with me." Somehow, Zack's expression shines brighter. "I bet you'd be good at it, 'cuz you help yoru mom and dad make stuff like buildings all the time. So you're strong. The Guard protects everybody, not just the King."
Someone who protects everybody? Aeleus muses over the statement. It doesn't sound too hard; his dad has to make sure everyone stays safe during construction projects and does a good job. Besides, being a guard sounds a little cooler. "Okay," he agrees. "I'll joing the Guards when you do." At Zack's expectant stare, Aeleus grins and holds out one of his hands. The smack of their high five is lost in the noise of the party, but to them, the promise echoes in their hearts. Zack is beginning another excited babble about the King's Guards when Aeleus spots a familiar figure in the crowd. "Be back in a minute!" he tells Zack suddenlyu, leaping out of this seat. Quickly, he makes his way throught eh tight crowd, eyes focused ont eh whtie and red which is also struggling to move along. He manages to catch up tot eh girl right outside the crowd and underneath a doorway. "Hey!"
Starting in surprise, the girl turns and stares at him. After he catches his breath, Aeleus states, "I don't have cooties. I checked and everything."
"How do you know for sure?"
"Because I checked," Aeleus repeats. "Me and my friend both did. A teenager even told us we didn't have any."
"Really?" Her eyes go wide in awe before she ducks her head down shyly. "Oh. Ok. Um. I'm sorry I yelled at you." She peers up beneath erh bangs. "My big sister told me y-boys have cooties."
Oh, that explains it. Glad it's all sorted out, Aleeus shrugs easily. "It's okay. What's your name? I'm Aeleus."
"I'm Micheia." Nervously, she fiddles with teh hem of her skirt. Throught eh shifting gaps of her hair, Aeleus can see her face begin to go red again. It's worrying; more than a few of his relatives have falln sick to fever. he's just about to ask if she's feeling alright when a gorwn-up stumbles out of the crowd, cheeks rosy and eyes bright. Laughing loudly, he gesture wildly with a cup.
"Ah, what beauty! Have you youngins seen the snow in the moonlight tonight?" He grins goofily when they just blink at him. "Or are you two young lovebirds too caught up in each other? Ah, to be caught beneath teh White Wish. I remember when I was a young lad..." Still babbling to everyone and no one, the man disappears back into the crowd and thus leaving Aeleus thoroughly confused. HE turns to Micheia to ask her if she knows what was up with him. The question never leaves his mouth; the girl is staring right up at the top of the doorfame, mouth agape and face redder than a wildfire flower. Frowning, Aeleus follows her gaze. A many petaled flower has been pinned there, and is almost as white as falling snow.
"My mother has told me about that flower," he tells Micheia. "Those are the only flowers that bloom in the winter."
The girl just nods, stunned into silence. At last, she finds her voice. "Not just that," she squeaks. "White Wish flowers go up high, and if two peopel walk under it, they have to kiss."
Oh. Aeleus shifts in place awkwardly. "They have to?"
Micheia nods wildly in her anxiety, face burning. "They have to."
The two children stand there in shared awkwardness, a perfectly good silence ruined by the party cheer around them. Every fives seconds, he glacnes up at the flower with a scowl while Micheia refuses to look from her shoes. Soon, he gets tired of the quiet and says, "I don't want to do it, but if we have to, then we should."
Micheia flinches, and Aeleus figures she doesn't like the idea either. At least, he does until she stutters out, "U-Um, do... do you not wanna kiss me 'cuz I'm not pretty?"
Feeling suddenly trapped, Aeleus glances around nervously. What's he supposed to say!? Girls ar eso weird when they get like this. If he says she isn't (which is kind of al ie), then she'll cry. His dad's always said any man who makes a girl cry deserves to be linched. On the other hand... If she says she is, she'll wanna know why he won't kiss her! So. Weird.
"If..." Aleeus keeps himself from squirming. "If you promise not to tell any of my friends, I guess we could kiss." Almost immediately, she covers her mouth with boths hands and makes a really strange noise. Her face is getting so red, Aeleus thinks her head'll catch fire. After she gets a hold of herself, however, she nods quickly and makes an 'x' over her heart. with that all decided, they shuffle closer to each other. He just wants to get this over with, so, squeezing his eyes shut, he leans down and she forward...
their noses crash together, and they pull back with a wince, rubbing their sore noses. "Ow. I think we did that wrong," aeleus mutters.
"My mommy and daddy kind of turn their heads funny when they kiss," Micheia says. "Here, see-" Carefully, she puts her hands on the sides of his face and tilts his head to the side. With her hands still on his cheeks, she leans up. Her face feels really wamr Aeleus think sfor a moment before their lips press against each other and his brain goes blank.
For a moment, they're frozen in place and then Aeleus pulls back. Huh. That wasn't exactly exciting. He doesn't get why grown-ups like that kind of stuff so much. "are you okay?" he asks Micheia, whose ears are even red. Another flurried nod answers him, and then she giggles, holding her own face in her hands now. Without another word, she dashes into teh crowd, giggling all the while. Aeleus blinks.
Girls. Not just 'so weird', really super weird.
After thoroughly washing his entire face, Aeleus finds Zack in the same place as last time, with a little difference. There's a red-haired boy with too-big goggles on his head, yelling at Zack from outside. Zack just ignores him and grins at Aeleus. "Didja find somethign cool?"
"Nah, just really weird." Aeleus watches as the boy in the snow stomps off in the direction fo the front door. "Was that Reno?"
"Yep." Zack looks proud. "He was tryin' to shove ice cubs down the back of Aerith's dress, so I opened a window and shoved him through it."
Aeleus doesn't know who 'Aerith' is, but it's probably a girl, he figures. Sitting down besides Zack, he mentions, "He's going to be angry when he comes back."
Zack's eyes just glitter mischieviiously. "Then we'll dump him throught eh window again. You still gotta get back at him for Penele, right?"
