This story begins with two little children from Demithros: a girl with blue eyes, by the name of Anni, and a boy with red eyes, by the name of Leth. They are both fox-demons, but are not of the same parents. They have known each other practically since they were born. Their parents were good friends. The children play together all the time and have a special bond. They are the best of friends, and they only trust each other.
Leth has shoulder-length, dark blue hair that naturally falls over his left eye. His eyes are a scarlet red. He is quite strong, as most demons are. At full strength, he can lift up to 1000 pounds. Leth can transform into a fox at will, but he's still a little shaky with it. In his normal form, he has fox ears and a fox tail, both of which are the same colour as his hair. This would include his fox form. Leth also has the peculiar ability to control the essence of flame and water.
Anni has long, red hair that goes down just a little bit past her shoulders. Her eyes are a vibrant blue. She's not as strong as Leth, but still stronger than a human. She can only lift up to 500 pounds. Anni has red fox ears and a fox tail. She can also transform into a fox at will, but the ability to transform into any creature or inanimate object she can dream up is her main power.
One day when they were both 6 years old, they were playing together at a lake that had a surface that would sparkle and shine under the light of their vibrant yellow star, Alvearna (what we would call our Sun). Their parents came to them. They each gave the children a necklace of their own with a golden chain and crystal pendant in the shape of half a star hanging from it. The pendants would glow when they were near each other, and they shimmered like a rainbow. The girl's pendant was black, while the boy's was white - atleast, when they were apart.
The parents explained to them that there was a war about to break out. They had to stay with each other at all times, or fear being separated. They were to be sent to a sanctuary in Candeline. The pendants would hide their fox-demon attributes, and make them seem as if they were Hanthros children, ensuring their safety.
Their parents bid them farewell as they sent them off on a transport-cloud up to Candeline, where they would be safe... or so they thought. Anni and Leth held onto each other's hands, not wanting to be apart. Leth smiled at Anni, and Anni smiled back at him. They had to admit, this was a frightening experience but they were happy as long as they were together. Their pendants glowed furiously, like a blazing fire. It started to rain, but they didn't care. They both stared at each other's eyes, as if hypnotized.
Suddenly, a Hanthros man, (who was busy staring at another rather attractive Hanthros woman in another plane), crashed into the cloud as the children were about half-way there. The impact sent Leth flying straight into the deep, murky blue Ocean below. Anni was knocked unconscious and fell into another cloud, which was conveniently also going to Candeline. Leth cried out to Anni, but she couldn't hear him. His voice then faltered as he flailed about in the water, not knowing how to swim.
A nearby Hanthros fisherman with peculiar white eyes saw Leth and brought him into the boat. From there, he preformed the breath of life until Leth threw up sea water in his face. The fisherman proceded to wipe it off quickly and wrapped Leth in blankets. Leth stared up at the man and his white eyes, and started to drift off to sleep. Drowning certainly takes a lot out of a person.
When Leth awoke, he was in a candle-lit cave. This was not the Candeline he had imagined. Suddenly, he remembered Anni and the plane, breaking down into tears at the thought. He wondered if Anni was okay. Mostly, he wondered where he was. He saw a figure move in the corner of the room, and froze. You had to be careful around strangers, you know. Even ones that saved your life.
It was a human, dressed in a yellow hat and poncho. "Howdy," the man said, trying to be friendly. Leth stared at him as if he was speaking in a foreign language. The man stared back. "You do speak english, right?" he asked, wondering if the boy was from another part of Hanthros. Leth nodded, but his mouth stayed tightly closed. He didn't feel safe yet.
The man pulled up a chair and brought it beside Leth's sleeping place. "... Alrighty, then. The name's Alta. Alta Taeger," Alta shook Leth's hand. Leth stared at his hand and wondered if he had Hanthros germs on him now. Alta took off his hat, revealing bleached-white hair, as if his eyes and his hair just had to match. He looked quite muscular and young, even if he did have white hair. Not a wrinkle in sight. Leth wondered why he was so muscular for a fisherman, but thought it was better not to ask right now.
"Do you have a name?" Alta asked. Leth looked puzzled for a moment, wondering if he should tell him his name. But, then again, this man did save him from a watery grave. He should have been thankful. Should have, being the key word here.
"M-my na-name's.. Max!" A lie, straight from the demon's mouth. Alta looked into his eyes. Leth's throat clenched up. It was as if Alta was staring though his soul. "Max, eh? Something tells me you're not telling the truth. But, anyway.. I guess you wouldn't really trust a stranger, right?" Leth stared at him. Did he read his mind, or was he really just guessing?
"I reckon youd've been famished by the time you woke up, so I fixed you up some grub," Alta laughed, gesturing to a small pot hanging over an open flame. Leth looked perplexed. Alta laughed again, "I made you food, little guy." Leth's stomach growled. He blushed a little at his stomach's noise and got off of the bed. He felt light-headed and nearly fell over. Alta caught him and put him back on the bed. "It's okay, little guy. Just stay there, I'll make you a bowl," Alta smiled warmly.
Leth laid back in the bed as Alta fiddled with the pot. Leth thought about Anni... and where she was, or how she was doing. Leth sighed, "Anni..." Alta stopped for a minute. "Is that your name, little buddy?" Leth perked up. He shook his head violently, blushing. Alta grinned. "Is that your… girlfriend's name?" he said, almost evilly. Leth shook his head violently again, blushing deeper. "No! No way! S-she's not my girlfriend!" Alta grinned wider. "Alright, alright, I'll leave it alone." Leth by now was curled up, facing away from Alta. He'd struck a nerve. Leth hid his face in a pillow and kept silent.
A few minutes later, Leth started to speak again, looking back at Alta. "... But... I do miss her." Alta handed him a bowl of soup. He smiled warmly and said, "Here. This'll probably make you feel better." Leth sipped a spoonful of soup. He stared at the soup for a second, wide-eyed. It was delicious! All of the flavours mixed into one tasted like it was dancing on his taste buds as it flowed across his tongue, and into his throat. He quickly slurped up the rest and started to feel sleepy again. Alta took the bowl and tucked Leth in for the night, and went to sleep in a bed in another room.
As Leth's eyes closed, he thought about Anni one last time, and started to dream.
