I looked up in surprise as the flame died out, but the second I did he was looking into my eyes like a window to my soul (or so they say), but he had a look on his face that looked like confusion. Then he grabbed my arm and dragged me down the street without saying a word.
“Hey! Where are you taking me?!” I yelled but obviously he didn’t care. I yanked his arm back with mine with astounding strength and he whirled around shocked. “Who are you and where are you taking me?” I repeated with a stern voice that held no fear, thank God.
He sighed, pulled me over to the side of the road, and looked at me. “My name is Adon Doersay.” He said. “You need to come with me, I know I’m the last person in the world you’d want to go with but you need to trust me okay?” He looked deep into my eyes, so deep that I didn’t know what he expected to see. But the same thing happened with the fire, I was drawn to him. Adon was like a whirlpool that I couldn’t escape. So I went with him, strangely enough he took me to the Van Slike mansion.
I looked at him and asked, “What are we doing here?”
He was standing next to me like a big brother would at a museum and put his hand on my shoulder. His touch was so warm, like the fire I saw coming from him. I didn’t pull away. “Look at the mansion,” He said calmly, but to his misfortune, I heard a sliver of hope trickle into his words. “Now squint your eyes and concentrate on what you’re looking at. Make sure in your mind that it’s not an illusion. You know that feeling you get when you’re at a magic show and the magician creates an optical illusion and try your hardest to see through it? Do that now…Tell me what you see?”
I looked at him in disbelief and he was turned toward the building. Was he serious? He wanted me to pretend that I was at a magic show? Who was this Adon guy? I shook the thought away and did what he said. I squinted my eyes and concentrated, and soon the old crusty mansion…it began to shake! I was scared shitless mind you but I continued to look. The building still began to shake but then the image started to fall apart, like when a window shatters and all the little pieces fall one by one. Behind the shattered shards of picture lay another, more beautiful image.
The building now didn’t have the paint peeling off, or the door falling off its hinges, or even the shutters torn to bits. The Van Slike mansion that now stood before me was huge and gorgeous, the paint was a pristine color of white and the shutters looked less like they belonged on a house and more like they belonged on a castle. They were golden and glistening. The door frame matched the shutters and the door looked like it had widened and split, for now there were two large double doors that could open a whole other world with just one twist of the handle. It was beautiful; the mansion was now a small castle that beckoned us inside. It was surely a sight for anyone’s eye, sore or not.
I stared at Adon in astonishment but “What do you see?” was all he said. A small smirk had crawled its way onto his face as he kept his sight on the mansion. I started describing it to him with wonder in my voice. I described everything from the door, to the paint, to the vines that catacomb across either side of the building. I could feel my eyes widen with every word I spoke and a smile spread more and more, but I couldn’t stop. The words flowed out of me like string of magnificent music! When I was finally finished, I ended with a big sigh as all my skepticism flew out on my breath. I looked up at him and he was turned towards me and was smiling like I had accomplished something and he was proud of himself.
“What was that? What did I just do?” I asked eagerly.
“You, Maxx, have just seen through your first glamour.” He said still smiling.
