The girl pranced along the leaf-litered street. The wind was blowing hard, whipping the trees' discard here and there. She was rather jovial for no particular reason that day, despite a gloomy and damp morning. She gazed upward to find the Sun in good humor now as well: she made sure to savor it. She noted the light warmth that dampened her cheek; combining that with the brisk breeze that circled her, everything was right.
Ahead in the road, however, a shape caught her attention. The figure seemed to be the earthly embodiment of sheer darkness. This mass, this thing, glided easily over the pavement as if it were floating. As the human girl and enveloping entity drew nearer together, the realization fell upon her: this thing was, in fact, a person.
While she attempted to discern the human beneath the blackness, the playful wind batted her hair around; it howled with glee. Frustrated, she smacked her hair out of her eyes and subdued it with a rubber band: the wind would have to find a different playmate.
The moment she had a chance to take a clear look at this man, he was gone. She blinked a few times and looked around. There was no sign of any life-form being close to her. She stood still for a moment, then turned around: the only movement she saw was the sway of the trees. She began to walk backwards for a few steps to make sure he wasn't hiding.
One, two, three...
She could step back no further. She froze for a moment, realizing the implications of her inaction. She gasped, but could speak no words.
He hunched his back until his head was right beside hers. He slowly wrapped his arms around her midsection, draping his cloak over her body: she could feel the black heavily on her skin, and sensed the energy being drained out of her.
She dared not turn to see his face with what strength she had left, but could hear his smile growing. Just before she collapsed, he purred into her ear,
Welcome...into the Darkness
