A young man had just settled into his new home in a small town called Shadowbourne. He had short dark hair and hazel eyes, and his name was Aldo Ferranti. Aldo had a promising future in tech design. He hoped to one day save enough money to design an unusual and spectacular home of his own. The forest located just outside of Shadowbourne perked his interest for a perfect location for his dream house. But until he can get the funds to make his dream, he made whatever designs that he was requested and payed to make.
Now having some free time after moving in for a month and selling some of his designs in his new location of work, Aldo sat on the couch in his living room and flipped on the tv. Suddenly he heard a knock at the door. With Shadowbourne being such a small town, Just about everyone in town had quickly learned of Aldo’s arrival. When he answered the door, a short scrawny man with glasses and a tall and beautiful woman with long brown hair stood professionally before him with welcoming smiles and holding clipboards.
“Hello, Mr. Ferranti Sir,” the scrawny fellow greeted him. “I am Nigel and this is Brenda. We are the head managers of this years Shadowbourne Parade.”
“Shadowbourne Parade?” Aldo asked.
Brenda nodded, “Yes. We have a parade every year during the end of the Summer based on a popular legend we have here in this town. There are many versions of our local legend and we were hoping you would be interested in taking part and designing a float representing one of the them.”
“Hmm . . . I don’t know,” Aldo thought out loud. “I don’t even know anything about the local legend here. I mean I just moved in.”
“We know, Aldo.” Brenda spoke softly with a smile. “That’s why we brought you this.”
Nigel adjusted his glasses and handed Aldo a sheet of paper that read on the top “The Girl in the Forest”. “There is also a website that has been printed out on that sheet so you can see the other versions. We are willing to pay you to make yours the featured float for this years parade. We have seen your work, and feel that you could make this years parade one to remember.”
“Wait!” Aldo exclaimed, shocked at the man’s words. “You’ll pay me?”
“We only pay our featured float.” Brenda answered flipping her brown hair. “The floats entered by anyone else, get a chance to win a two hundred dollar prize. The featured float gets payed three hundred for helping us get everyone in town inspired for the event. So really you are being payed to commercialize the parade.”
“Really?” Aldo asked in disbelief.
Nigel adjusted his glasses once more, “Yes. Now floats made to commercialize their own businesses and corporations must pay fifty dollars to enter, but are not eligible for the two hundred dollar prize. And I tell you that incase you choose to design or make a float to commercialize yourself. Now because the float we are requesting for you to design will be made specifically for the event and to commercialize the event, that fifty dollars will not apply to you.”
“Well then, I guess I’ll do it.”
“Great!” Brenda pulled out a clipboard that she held under her arm and took out a pen that she had hidden behind her ear then handed them to Aldo. “If you don’t mind please fill out this form.” Aldo began signing the papers immediately while listening to her explain the details that he saw were mentioned in the form she gave him. “The Shadowbourne Parade will be on July 24th. The deadline for the featured float is May 30th. That gives you 3 months to make the designs for the float and also get the float made. The deadline for other floats that will be entered into the parade will be June 15th. Once again the featured float will be what we use to get everyone in town interested in this event. Also volunteers for the parade must sign up before July 15th.”
Aldo finished signing up the forms pleased. “So I have 3 months to make the designs huh?”
Brenda grinned. “Well I wasn’t sure if you would be busy or need any time to think it over.”
“Well I appreciate the heads up and the offer. I may enjoy this.”
“Good. Thank you, Aldo.” Brenda winked at Aldo then took the signed forms, then walked away.
“We appreciate your time and participation, Mr. Ferranti.” Nigel nodded in approval that walked after the tall brunet.
Aldo smiled and waved then waked back inside. “Guess that means I have some studying to do.” He returned to the living room couch and turned off the TV and began to read the sheet of paper containing the legend, “The Girl in the Forest”.
As he read the tale he discovered how dark it was. The images that the tale left in his head were nightmarish. “Maybe there is a lighter version of this story.”
Aldo then searched the web, trying to find the other versions of the legend and found another version where the girl actually became evil and helped some robbers break into her own home. In that tale, not only did she help the robbers kill her own family but she killed the robbers and took all the valuables and burned the house to cover the evidence. That tale seemed more believable, but still he wanted something that was not so dark. If the float he designed, was also meat to be inspirational for everyone to join in and get involved, then he wanted his idea to be different from the others and much more joyful.
As he continued his research of the legend he couldn’t help but remember that the first one he read of her love and it being taken away. All Aldo could think now is, what if he made the float of her deep longing for her love and what she lost. Something that reflected her joy rather than her pain. Aldo took out a piece of paper and began designing a float that would be beautiful rather than depressing and dark. Something that would make the parade memorable and worth mentioning.
