I believe that the Gaia admins finally noticed the currently high and rising population of Gaia's community. So, to help get rid old people AND prevent more people from joining, they are destroying the layout and lowering the functionablity of many features.
One example is the friendlist. Now, if you haven't noticed, the friendlists are no longer in alphabetical order. Now, I am sure most of the people reading this are heading toward their friendlists right now to check this. In this case, I will wait...
...
...okay, now has everyone had their look? I hope so, because I am about to continue.
Now, some people, such as me, were a little, well, ticked off when the friendlists first became alphabetical. They already had their lists memorized, when suddenly, BAM!, it was reordered. Now, when the alphabetical friendlists were memorized, they were then reordered again. People may now get so angry, they might leave.
Then again, there is the infamous site redesign. They changed the mascots to little island people. They also made the Logo orange and changed the header. Now, I have an extension on Firefox to fix the mascot/logo problem for the most part, but why did they change the header? Now I have to click two pages when originally I only needed to click once. Not good for our dial-up users, where it taks two hours just to open one page. These certain people may leave, among with people with IE and don't want to download the free Mozilla Firefox and can't change the logo.
That's my opinion. Just get used to it.

Although IMO if you still use dail-up you don't belong on Gaia. Gaia was created in 2003, those still on dail-up are living in 1998.
