...waving branches as they're waving goodbye...

All day, this fragment of Elvis Costello's "Favourite Hour" has been looping endlessly in my mind, and since I was stationed at the entrance to Great Hopes Plantation (CW's farm site, located along the walking path to the Visitor Center, so you'd think it would get a good amount of business, but most people miss it entirely), I had plenty of time for idle thoughts. I've never been entirely sure what the song is about-- it seems to have something to do with an execution-- but I know why I kept thinking of those lines: the girl I'm desperately in love with, the one I discussed several entries ago in this journal, is leaving sooner than I'd thought, and I don't want to see her go.

She told me yesterday her last day at work will be July 22. That's only slightly more than two weeks away, and it's filled me with agitation-- I want to do something special for her, something that would let her know how I feel, but I don't want to repeat my miserable past history and pull some really idiotic stunt that backfires and causes her to hate me. My plans to take her to see the Pirates of the Caribbean sequel fell through when I found out she was already going with a group of friends; and in retrospect, that doesn't seem like the greatest idea anyway, at least not after reading some of the reviews. xp

So I think I'm going to ask her to go to dinner with me, as a celebration of her starting grad school and also a farewell (though I'm probably not going to put it in those terms). I wish I'd thought it through more clearly by the time I saw her at the end of the day today; but then again, I wasn't expecting to see her at all.
