A few months ago Leana and I were introduced to a fighting style we were not familiar with, called Muay Thai, through a film called Ong-Bak: Muay Thai Warrior. Most people have likely heard of this film by now, but we are not that big on catching films when they are first released, we have only seen it recently.
We were in awe through nearly the entire movie at the kickass fighting scenes in Ong-Bak. We were so focused on Tony Jaa (Jaa Panom) the entire time that we totally didn't mind that the entire film consisted of running and fighting, running and fighting, running and more fighting.
When we heard that a newer movie called The Protector (Tom-Yum-Goong) starring Tony Jaa was in our local Dollar Theatre we went to see it straight away.
My jaw was hanging open for the entire length of the movie. The fighting scenes were almost non-stop, it was ******** amazing. Also, the fact that Kham (Jaa's character) had such a personal reason motivating him in each fight made it seem even more intense than the ones in the previous film we had seen.
Some people might not be very interested in movies featuring Muay Thai fighting styles, because it isn't very flashy. It's quite brutal and straight-to-the-point, which is something I can appreciate. A lot of the time while watching a Kung Fu movie I will find myself saying something like "Stop dancing and kill him already!". I certainly did NOT have the opportunity to say anything like that while watching Jaa in these two films.
I have been familiar with Thai Boxing for a while, which is something I was not interested in at all. I do not like Boxing of any type. However, until I saw the old styles of Muay Thai, I had no idea that Thai Boxing was just a kiddy version of real fighting.
So this is something I am certainly going to be following for a long time.
Holy crap, yes.
