Banging On A Frying Pan
A random collection of whatever thoughts happen to be going through my mind at the time...
I hate winter!
My favorite part of the original Creature Comforts was always the jaguar. Reclining on a log, he spoke about Brazil and about the virtues of living in a hot climate. "Where would I want to live? In a hot country!" I'm coming to identify more and more with that mindset, even though I ostensibly live in the South and we're supposed to be a relatively temperate area. But Virginia is hardly the deep South, and cold is cold no matter where you are.

When Adam was visiting, he repeatedly commented on how warm it is here compared to Boston. Maybe so, but lacking that point of reference, I find our cold weather annoying enough. I don't like waking up and having to scrape ice off my windshield-- ice that has somehow formed in two layers, so that removing the first layer means you have to scrape over the same area a second time to get rid of the real problem underneath. And I also don't like getting up in the middle of the night to turn the heat on-- we live in an old house with a temperamental oil furnace and a thermostat that's supposed to be capable of regulating itself automatically, but in actual practice has to be manually set every time. I usually have trouble going back to sleep afterwards, and end up thinking way too much about things that are worrying me.

I'm writing this entry on a break from work at the Randolph House. I don't know why the hell they've even got me there-- I haven't cleared to give tours through the house, so I'm stuck out in the kitchen, and they've already got three other people working out there who know what they're doing on that site a hell of a lot better than me. And once the guy doing the Other Half tour (our hour-long walking tour about slavery) gets back from that, he's going to be out there with us too. I could easily have stayed home and it wouldn't have made a damn bit of difference to anyone. As chaotic as the Randolph House is-- everyone was in a meeting this morning, so no one came to open the house until almost 9; the main site supervisor is on vacation, and I wasn't even shown on their original schedule-- that probably would've been the better option. But it's too late now; I have to stick it out for the rest of the day. Maybe I'll call in sick tomorrow. xp
