I had my very first one today! It was so so fun....my teacher is really, really nice and cheerful. Fortunately, he's not one of those annoying over-perky people, either, and I like him. He likes kids, or teens, I think, since he works at the highschool.
I went to the high school, a little jittery and not sure what to expect, but mostly cheerful. we went into a little room with a drum set, a xylophone, a bunch of other drums, a marimba (a larger version of a xylophone, one with different wood and a different pitch) and stuff....
So first, he showed me how to hold the drum sticks. At first I kept screwing up when I was playing simple rythms on the snare drum, but then I remembered to turn my hand the way he said and it was a lot easier.
Then we moved on to the drum set! This was my favorite part....I only worked with four things; the bass drum, with my right foot, the cymbals with my left foot, the cymbal with my right hand, and the snare drum with my left hand. I at first played the two right-sided parts and the the two left-sided ones back and forth, and then when I was a little more used to it, I played right-all-right-all, back and forth. Which he said was a simple (probably very simple) rock rythm.
Then I played a few easy scales on the marimba.....basically, it's set up like a piano, just with mallets and the keys are all the same color. that was fun!
YAY!!! Next week I don't get a lesson, though, cause it's MLK Jr. day.....oh well, I can practice on my mathbook/piano/chair (different exercises) with my drumsticks and stuff! blaugh
