Kershin on the mountain
Kershin opened one hesitant eye and then yawned cavernously. He stretched like a cat as he got up then sauntered out of his cave. The sound of dripping water and the scent of rain drifted to him as he approached the cave mouth. A misty rain fell over the sheer slopes of the mountain, and little rivulets of water trickled past his cawed feet as Kershin lifted his muzzle and breathed in the fresh, damp air. He snorted as a drop of rain fell on his nose, then he backed into the cave again. 'The world smells different...'

Kershin tilted his head and tried to hear if there was any other creatures nearby. He shook his head and paced in a circle. He could hear mice scurrying back in the depths of his cave, but nothing outside. He sighed, a small puff of smoke escaping from his nostrils.

The dragon finally decided to step out into the rain and he unfurled his feathered wings. The smallish wings didn't look like much for flying, but as he stretched them, they extended into large, black wings the color of ashes. He crounched into a spring and them lept from the rocky slope. As he shot into the air water beaded over his scales and collected in the fur covering his hind end. Surveying the ground below he caught sight of a mountain goat. He shifted his weight to his left wing and dipped down, circled around towards his prey. He slashed out with his foreclaws as he dove overhead of the beast, rending deep gouges in its flesh and sending it stumbling down the cliff. He swooped down and latched onto the struggling goat, then neatly snapped its neck. It's panicked cries abated instantly and Kershin bite into the tough meat of the goat. As he munched on his catch, Kershin looked around at the landscape and licked his bloody jaws.

The slopes of the mountain looked much the same, but the smell of the air was very different, almost as if ladden with some deeper sense of dread. The dark clouds overhead cast the earth into a hazy twilight and dulled the glint off his scales. He frowned and shifted his coloration to match his dull surroundings. Only the bright lime color arounf his snout, stained with blood held the same color. He felt out of place in so desolate a landscape. The world he'd known was colorful and vibrant; he enjoyed shifting his coloring to the bright shades of green and blue, purple and red of the flowers that had once bloomed along these same slopes.

Kershin turned back to his meal and crunched noisily on the bones. He felt the pang of loneliness at he sat there wondering if he was the only dragon on the mountain.
