Chapter 2
I hid behind a tall tree and tried to catch my breath. In the milky white snow I could see two pairs of footprints. One, mine. The other, obviously not human, for they were too big and misshapen. Mine lead straight to where I was standing and the other... went into the woods. I sighed in relief. I was safe, alive. But then that sigh stopped as a sight took my breath away. The footprints led through the woods and hooked around to... right where I was standing. No more than ten feet away towered a creature so ugly, so vile, so repulsive there were no words to describe it and if there were it would haunt me forever. My knees gave way and I sunk into the cold hard snow. I had lost. I bowed my head and as I did my locket fell from my neck. It fell with a metallic clink and it glinted in the sunlight. It was heart-shaped and golden, the creature would not miss it. He closed the gap between us with only one monstrous pace and bent down to pick up the locket with a monstrous hand. I peered up through my hair and saw it lying on the ground. I quickly grasped it, noticing the dents and scratches that weren't there before. The thing had tried to destroy my locket, but why? I wondered as I got up. As I did, I fell back down and all the whiteness of the earth, went black.
