Name: Basilisk Blade
Type: Flamberge
Class: Slashing/Piercing
Weight: 25 lbs.
Made from: Blackfire*
Wielded: Left hand
Worn when not wielded: Floats over Zerrix's back.
Special abilities: The abilities of the Basilisk Blade are as follows:
Sight: The "eye" of the Blade is capable of sight out to fifty feet of actual physical items. Beyond that, it is able to see the souls of any sentient creatures within a hundred feet of Zerrix. This vision is not limited to the directions the "eye" is facing.
Serpent's Tongue: It has a telepathic link with Zerrix, enabling him to see what the Blade sees, and vice-versa. It also has a corruption effect--Anyone that the "eye" gazes into it can attempt to corrupt by communicating empathically to him/her and promising that which they most desire. Zerrix can suppress the communication by concentrating on the sword. If he does not, he is also able to "hear" what the Blade is "saying" to the other person and get an idea of their personality.
Blackfire Release: Should Zerrix grip the blade in both hands, he allows the Blade to begin burning off his soul, a little at a time, in exchange for control of the Blackfire within the sword. This increases his own physical power significantly, or alternatively gives him control of several physical tongues of Blackfire. These flames work as actual fire, except that it cannot spread without Zerrix's will. During the time Zerrix is invoking a Blackfire Release, his eyes become as the Basilisk Blade's--Completely red, save for a single black slit.
Embrace of Corruption: While attuned to the Basilisk Blade, any time it is not in use it will float over Zerrix's back unless willed otherwise. It will also fly to Zerrix's hand if called, but it does not teleport and cannot move through any solid matter. Zerrix is also able to wield the Basilisk Blade one-handed, despite its size and weight.
Corruption's Toll: Every time Zerrix activates Blackfire Release, he loses a small portion of his soul, depending on the length of time in Release. Eventually, given enough time, the blade will take complete control of Zerrix for a short time, and then consume him completely. Having the sword on his person at all takes a toll on Zerrix's mind as the Blade ceaselessly assails it with images of hate and carnage, or promises of glory, riches, or baser things. As such, Zerrix rarely sleeps well at night, and always has something of a haunted look in his eyes. Any creature killed by the Basilisk Blade has its soul absorbed by the blade.
Description: The wavy edge of the blade, as well as the ornate crosspiece and spiked pommel, are as black as pitch, and seem to absorb light rather than reflect it. The rest of the blade is silver, black sigils engraved therein. Set in the center of the crosspiece is a single blood-red ruby, about the size of a fist. It is perfectly round, and bears a snake's eye slit pupil carving on either side, dead center, and running in the same direction as the blade. If observed closely while it is actively looking around, it may be seen to twitch.
History: The Basilisk Blade was not originally a weapon, but a gem, the very gem that rests in the crosspiece of the sword. As people began to wield its power, one eventually decided that the Basilisk's Eye needed a more fitting form for an instrument of such death. And so the flamberge that holds the gem to this day was forged of Damascus steel, and as the gem was inserted into the slot, the entire sword changed in appearance, becoming something truly horrifying to behold on the field of battle. It has held this form ever since, and appears very pleased with it. Its history has been filled with war, bloodshed, and carnage as the black flames consumed many.
