"If we are unwilling to be aware of the dark, we cannot see the light."
- John Cowan
I have to agree a lot with this quote. It is so true. If you don't see both sides to a problem, conflict, or choice then you don't see it at all. Without one part of the story, one can not make a complete decision. Let me use an example.
Here's one such issue: whether homosexual marriage is right or wrong. On one side there are the liberals that believe freedom of choice. They believe that everyone is entitled to their preferences and tastes. They think that just because a religion dictates one thing, does not mean that its word is final. On the other side are the conservatives and/or Christians. They think that God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve. They believe that there is a reason that humans were made so that a female and male reproduced rather than similar genders.
Alright, so I know both sides of the issue. I have found out each of their justifications. I understand why they believe in their theory. Now that I've seen both beliefs, I can make my own decision without ignorance. Looking at it from either angle, I find that one angle is more attractive. From there, I would cement my own ideas and take on my choice. That is where I would speak and argue from.
So what's my point? My point is that people who make decisions from only one angle are ignorant. I dislike how they turn to me and preach what they believe, meanwhile blinding themselves to any other reasoning. No matter what you say to them, they close their minds and ears and refuse to listen. I mean, what is that? How PRESUMPTUOUS of you to assume that only YOUR view is correct. How absolutely NARROW-MINDED. There's a word for a person who is like that, you know. Bigot.
