The Chrono Trigger/Cross/Radical Dreamers Connection
Be forewarned, some of this is speculation, but based as much as possible on in-game dialogue and other facts.
Radical Dreamers is the Bad End of Trigger
Trigger has ended and Crono wasn't resurrected. Lavos was defeated, but his friends failed to find the way to bring him back.

As Gaspar himself said, the egg will only revive someone if they have an extreme importance to the timeline. As you prove, he's not vital to defeating Lavos. So what is his importance that made him special enough to bend the rules of time and space for?

You find out when your unhappy ending leads to Radical Dreamers.

In RD, Guardia was taken and never reclaimed because it didn't have Crono's leadership as the new king. After conquering the upper continent utterly, Dalton began an expansion southward and had this timeline's Viper Manor built atop Zeal ruins to the west of Fionna's Forest, near the western coast.

His complete domination caused Lucca to flee her home and found her orphanage in the temple in Fionna's Forrest and that is where she raised Kid with monetary aid from "Magil", who is plainly stated to be Magus/Janus by the end of RD.

In this timeline, as far as we are aware, Lynx was not a pawn of the FATE machine. He had just gained knowledge of not only the Frozen Flame from Viper since Dalton had charged him to find it, but of Chrono Triggers. Most importantly that Lucca Ashtear was attempting to recreate them.

How did he get this information? From what we can gather, there is only one real possibility. Belthezar. Dalton couldn't possibly have known what Lucca was researching. He wasn't even aware of the Gurus or that they had survived throughout the ages.

The only way Lynx could have come into any kind of contact with knowledge of the time egg was when Belthezar had constructed his Neo-Epoch and traveled back in time, likely meeting Gaspar at the End of Time and speaking with him about the egg since it factored into his ideas for Project Kid.

This will be delved into later, but there has been significant proof in the games that if something is intended to happen or a person is meant to be somewhere at a certain point in time, the timeline will strive very hard to make it happen. If that is the case, we have our proof in Cross that he came to that time to Viper Manor, since Belthazar's Neo-Epoch is tucked away in a hidden room inside El Nido's Viper Manor. The only difference is that Lynx had bigger fish to fry in Cross and was no longer working on personal ambitions alone. His appearance can even be explained as having Reptite blood, as Reptite survivors exist, and the Demihumans prove that when they breed with humans, you get animal features in the offspring, and the Fate Machine simply used "Lynx" as the tool to acquire the things it needs because he WAS succesful in doing so in RD. Just as Magil being Magus also shows that Magus himself comes to that current time, it further explains that Guile being him is also not a stretch just because he went through the gate at the end of Trigger.

Considering all of this it's possible the original Lynx met Belthazar, took this powerful information and killed him. Ending Belthezar's intentions right then and there to use his time traveling to save Schala from her fate of destroying everything as the merged Time Devourer. Hence no Chronopolis, and no El Nido continent as a consequence.

This is a particularly important thing to know.

In the end, despite Kid and Magil's best efforts, the flame is taken by Porre and one of his followers also claims fragments of a shattered time egg. Guardia will never be reclaimed and Lucca was likely murdered in those Zeal Ruins since she had nowhere to escape to, unable to foil Lynx's plan to make Kid bring the egg to him so it would react with the flame.

Dalton wins. Game Over.

But wait, the ticking time bomb that is Schala is still struggling inside of a Lavos spawn and once she loses that fight, and she will without help, time will be compressed and devoured.

It makes the ending much darker if you think of the game not as not Serge's grandson Serge reading a journal by his grandfather, but time twisting and compressing as it's destroyed, causing future, past and alternate timelines of RD with bizarre potential endings to merge and distort and the final thought's reenactment of 'Kid' inviting 'Serge' to Viper Manor has already happened. Especially if you consider the fact that, should Serge die in the story of RD, the journal itself will read "And then I died."

Radical Dreamers is the worst possible outcome. All because one extremely important person wasn't there when the events unfolded. Just as Gaspar predicted.
