Okay, my recent torture in a 'virtual Japanese' course has made me ponder something, which is never good.
It's fairly common knowledge, especially on this site, that the suicide rate in Japan is high. This is because each individual's entire life revolves around an exam that allows them to get a higher education: this makes it pass-or-fail, CEO-or-minimum wage. However, having only the best and brightest in positions of power allows the country to be on the cutting edge of every new technology available. Nowadays, however, the school system there is becoming 'Americanized' so that students with low test scores (intelligence) are receiving better and better jobs, which is slowly going to have a ruinous affect on the advancement of technology.
If Japan allows it's less intellectual populace to hold important positions, their advancement will become something like America's, which isn't nearly as good in comparison. This will lower the standards, as there will be no clear-cut leader (Japan) to follow and attempt to reach.
The questions then, are: Should the exam system be held in the same revered manner as always, or should we allow this new liberal view of things? Or, is the cost in human life worth the advancement of humanity?
My opinion in general tends to coincide with Darwin. Those who can make the cut to have a high-ranking position have earned it, as it will be properly utilized. However, to differentiate myself, I don't consider those who cannot make the cut worthless. I don't have anything negative to say on minimum wage jobs, having one myself. I think that, were this to be implemented, there would have to be an increase in the minimum wage to help keep both sects happy and keep the suicide rates from going up, as they did in Japan.
