My switch to the viola!
Alrighty, so I picked up the Cello first when I was in fifth grade, and got down the basics. In seventh grade I picked it up again in the middle school orchestra, and proceeded to become first chair every time in the highest placed orchestra all through 8th grade, ending in a final preformance with a solo of mine, that was apperantly wonderful. Lots of people thought I had real "natural talent" (I even got into some special invitation orchestra!)

... which is why that summer after being out-of-country for a month (leaving my other half behind because I don't have a hard case and didn't want ol' fox to come back as toothpicks) I had lost most of my musical abilitys.

Next year in highschool, I was WAY behind, and couldn't play any of the music. I found that sitting there staring blankly at the music was a bad idea, so I dropped orchestra, vowing to take private lessons until I was good enough to re-join (AKA I can play the music. I don't mind being last chair)

After being away from it for a while, I started to think that I really didn't like to play the cello. I mean, I loved the sound it makes, and I love playing stringed instruments, but I needed an instrument that was easier to set up, faster to get out and put away. Something that I didn't think "I want to play, but I don't want to go through all the trouble to get it out!" The obvious answer is violin, but EVERYONE plays the violin. The cello's getting pretty popular too, now. I looked for an instrument where no man had ever looked before- viola.

Today I'm renting a viola. I'm SO excited! ^^

A viola, eh?
A viola... that's awesome. Much less mainstream than
the violin, and not a fad like the cello. I wish you luck
with your new instrument.

I play the freakin' drums, how do you think I feel? rofl
I might pick up the guitar eventually for the very same reason.
Good luck on the viola. Up until this journal entry I thought it was a type of olive. sweatdrop

Doom - Cello is a fad? o.0

SARAH- Try the bagpipes! Right now that's the instrument I want to learn! But if you really want to play viola *grumble grumble* THAT'S AWESOME WITH ME! Not that you need my approval to play new instruments or anything ... okay, why don't I leave now.

If you ever want a flute lesson (or lessons) feel free to let me know.
It's so easy to carry around, we tend to be picked on by other instruments - either that, or there's so many of us...
Piccolo. Now THERE'S something uber-easy to carry. My piccolo-friends sometimes carry their instruments and cases in their jackets.

You seem slightly piccolo-ey. *Tries to use orchestra-to-band member conversion waves* Care to learn?
Actually, if you learn how to play the flute, you then know how to play the piccolo.

Anyway, yeah. I have two flutes and all of my elementary books - and I'm happy to teach you as long as you give me advance notice. biggrin
