I will leave
Trees and sap
Twigs and roots
Leave the vast empty woods
Where every branch and every limb
Collide with sky
Where every leaf looks alike
Falls alike
Sees the world from different perspectives
But draws the same conclusions
I will leave because I am not a tree

I will leave open air
Acres of nothing
But corn and cows
Gasping and dying
Fields of tradition
Buried with their bodies
We till the soil
And wait for the next season
Shovels erect
Heads bowed in mourning
Not knowing what was lost

I will leave because I am alive
Because boulders flow through my veins
Crashing together inside me
Frantic lives lived shortly
Ended quickly
Clogging my arteries
I cannot stop the noise

I will leave because I have to
Because even the ocean leaves
Travels south for the winter
Takes refuge in Hawaiian shores
And never returns

Maine is one tenth
Of one tenth
Of one tenth
Of what could be
Snow in the wintertime
Mud for my birthday
Rain boots
Deer prints
Fishing trips

I will leave because I want to
Want to walk on a sandy shore
90 degrees
Walk on hot pavement
Sidewalk hotdog vendors
Cotton candy
Drug dealers
The possibility of death and life
Of cross dressers and prostitutes
Arm in arm
I will leave a simple life
For the cluttered, hectic, other
For everything not Thoreau
Life should not be so simple
And roads do not end
At the borders
